Hooray!

I know many have read my whinings about the Wallace/Hollywood Cache 8 theater here in Lawton from time and time. And you've seen lovely photos of their broken sign.

Finally something positive is being done. It has been confirmed that, as of August 29, the Cache 8 will become a 2nd run theater. The place isn't closing, but its conversion to 2nd run is just as good a development.

After 9 years of frustration, the Carmike 8 theater will finally have its pick of movie releases. Fans of the theater will no longer have to worry about it losing "Return of the King" or any other big picture in the release schedule. And that's only fitting for one of Carmike's best equipped and maintained theaters in this region.

The Carmike theater's earnings are certain to double in short order, and that may give way to possible theater expansion in the near future. I'm not a big fan of stadium seated conversions of existing traditional houses, but that may also happen (and could cause the #4 house to lose its THX certification).

The other first run theater in town is at Central Mall. Movie tech heads hate that place for its blurry pictures and not so great sound. Most folks over 25 don't care for the place for all the teenagers running amok like the ABC After School Special. The Carmike and mall theaters will compete head to head on most films, but I think they will coexist comfortably.

With the Cache 8 going second run, that will fill a significant need for bargain cinema in this area. The Vaska Theater is a single screen site and the only bargain house in the area. It commonly splits up two or three different movies, typically giving them only one showing per day. The Cache 8 will provide some much needed balance on that. They're still going to have to fix their sign (and with some new blood in the City Council, the City of Lawton has been in touch with them lately about that).

P.S., the owner of the Vaska here in Lawton is considering installing a digital sound system. With the Cache 8 going 2nd run, that will put more pressure on him to do it. I think he is leaning toward DTS for concerns of print wear on DD and SDDS tracks. But just how many 2nd run prints actually have DTS discs with them? Perhaps if anyone has any sweet deals on some DTS or Dolby Digital gear, amps, speakers, etc. laying around, you might try to get in touch.
