Warner Bros. eliminates peace image from 'What a Girl Wants' ads
The Associated Press
Last Updated 7:32 a.m. PST Tuesday, April 1, 2003
LOS ANGELES (AP) - "What a Girl Wants" is to avoid making a political statement.
Print advertisements for the teen comedy originally featured a photograph of star Amanda Bynes wearing an American flag T-shirt and flashing the peace sign with her fingers as she stands between two British royal guards.

With the war in Iraq sparking anti-war protests in the United States and abroad, however, Warner Bros. quickly changed the ad. The studio said Monday it feared the peace sign would be viewed as a political message.

New versions of the image feature Bynes with her right hand at her side, although many of the original posters had already been placed on billboards and buses before the change was made.

In the film, Bynes plays an American girl who discovers her estranged father is a British politician. "What a Girl Wants" is set for release on Friday.

Probably when people's sensitivity is no longer an issue in choosing what movies they see. [Smile]

AP got the story late and wrong!

The one-sheet went up around last Xmas; it has Amanda Bynes, flanked by two Royal Guards, wearing an American flag T-shirt and flashing a V. The first newspaper ads -- for the sneak preview last Saturday -- have the same scene but without the V. The opening weekend ads (in the Village Voice today) show Miss Bynes in that same T-shirt in front of a mansion.

Warner Bros. will have to do a new ad campaign for the overseas release. Given current events, a one-sheet with an American flag may set off a boycott outside the US.

Much to my amusement, http://www.moviefone.com/ has the "old" ad (at least as of 12:55 EDT on April 2).

it's completely obvious that that ad has nothing to do with the current political situation. the flag has only 14 stars on it, placing it sometime in 1791-1792. the revolutionary war ended in 1783, and the u.s. was not at war again until 1812. so the movie ad is simply celebrating this 29-year peaceful interlude. give me a break.

Thankfully, this "controversial" version is the only version we have of this poster, and it's up in our lobby in plain sight as we speak. I think that big business and the media needs to stop catering to the feelings of the easily offended minority and just give those who are either offended by or refuse to see a movie because of a poster a big [fu] . This goes double [fu] [fu] for those who wish to raise hell and try and petition to get the "offensive material" changed (see the Two Towers petition thread)
