When I was at Pacific's Gaslamp 15 in San Diego, I noticed in the second level hallway, a blank sign next to a theatre door. Naturaly, curiosity got the best of me and I tried to enter the auditorium, only to find that it was padlocked shut. On the way out I asked a manager about it, and he pointed to a sign in the lobby reading "Coming Soon: E-Sports Arena Arcade"

What the heck?

They are wasting an entire auditorium, in the buisiest part of downtown San Diego to build an Arcade??? What are they thinking??And why would they use an upstairs auditorium to do it?

It also annoys me that they still refer to themselves as a 15 plex, with gold 15s all over the marques and menus.

What do you guys think about this?

I don't know just how smart the whole arcade idea is, but this just goes to prove that customers cannot read. If this was your theater, you would have seen that sign. Once you go to a different theater, we all become blind. [Wink]

I've heard of arcades being turned into auditoriums, but not vice-versa. Is the auditorium they are cannibalizing stadium seating? That would make for an interesting arcade.

E-Sports?? That's dumb. Sports simulation games are the most unimaginative and boring videogames, IMHO. "Look! We can play Baseball by pressing buttons!" [Roll Eyes]

This sounds like real lunacy! I've been in the video game biz also for years and believe me---games ain't making any money! I've heard of some large theater complexes converting a few of the auds to restaurants and storefronts cause the theater wasn't making money, but to turn an aud into a video game arcade is just plain stupid. LOL - Thats probably true. And to think how pissed off I get when my patrons can't read the signs.

It is. And the consession is below the riser, so this will most definately be an interesting arcade. Mabey they will utilize the screen. Imagine 40ft X-Box. [Razz]

Clearview Cinemas opened the Mansfield Plaza in Hackettstown NJ as a 15-plex in 1998. That theater has been turned into a 14-plex.

We had a Christmas party some years back at one of the theaters I worked at. I brought my LCD projector and the assistant manager brought his PlayStation. We played Gran Turrismo and ate pizza until we got motion sickness. [Big Grin] (but not SPACE motion sickness [Razz] )
