I recently attended a training class with my wife at Cinema Training Central in Buffalo, NY, (sorry we missed meeting you Gordon, Tom Sauter taught the technical portion of the class but said that you teach it sometimes).

Anyhow, a gentleman in our class is planning to build a new art house theatre and I mentioned to him that I thought I had read in an industry trade publication that an association for art film exhibitors and distributors was formed a couple of years ago. He's interested in membership but now I can't find any information about the group. Does anybody know anything about it?

I have now been doing this cinema thing for 20 years. I started out at Landmark Theatre Corp. As far as I know, there is no Art-Film industry trade association.

Thanks Ian. You are probably right. Somehow I thought I read something in either BOXOFFICE or Film Journal International about an art house organization being formed a year or so ago but I may be mistaken. If I do find anything about such an organization I'll post it here for anybody that's interested.

I'll second that. No such animal, but one would certainly be most welcome. The problems facing art house operation are formidable; it sure would be a great help if a NATO-type org were available for the art house owners/managers.

Pardon me piggy-backing on this thread, but . . . as I small art house I wondered if it's really worth my time to join NATO. Since there seems to be others like me here, I thought I'd troll for opinions. Any comments would be great. Thanks.

I toyed with that idea also. I read their literature and I think there actually might have been a requirement that we didn't meet -- I'll have to look at that stuff again -- maybe it was that we are non-profit, but I recall in the end I decided against it. I am not sure how much interest they have in small operations anyway.

It can't hurt to contact them -- get their info and see if they might be of help for you and whether or not the membership fee is worth it.

Here, the British Film Institute has an here which supports independent and arthouse cinemas in a number of ways.

Does the American Film Institute do anything similar?
