I bought a small popcorn machine to use around the screening room and the bags I bought are to small (I'm a popcorn hog) Last time I went to the theater I bough a bag of just the right size. It measures 3-1/2 by 5 by 8-1/2 inches. But when I look on suppliers web pages they are all rated in Ozs. Anybody know what this size bag translates to in Ozs?

That sounds like a "medium" for chains like Regal and Cinemark.

We had a small Kingery popcorn maker where I used to work. Whenever I made a batch of popcorn, the odor would be carried through the ventilation system and attract people from all over the building, including another floor.

MMM, extra buttery-flavor topping please.

Take a look on the bottom of the bag. Most of the bags have the oz. printed on the bottom of the bag. The three sizes we use are 85oz. 130oz. and 170oz. i think. Hope this helps.

Yep I got it at a Regal and it does say Winpak Medium, but it doesn't have any numbers. It's a Spy Kids bag

Probably an 85-oz bag. We have that size and the measurements are pretty close.

Speaking as an ignorant UK popcorn hater who just likes to drop in on strange message threads I assume the "oz" measurements are really a sort of capacity thing like fluid oz rather than weight.

The thought of carrying 170oz (10 1/4 lbs!) of that smelly sticky carpet destroyer around is just too much to bear

Yes Dick I had the same vision. An 85 oz rating seemed like a lot of popcorn. Like a garbage bag full. What makes things more confusing is the popper is called a 6 oz. but will make more than two 85 oz bags of popped corn in a popping.
Thanks for the replies guys

Greg noted: "What makes things more confusing is the popper is called a 6 oz. but will make more than two 85 oz bags of popped corn in a popping."

Doesn't the popper rating (6 oz.) relate to the weight of the unpopped seeds needed to make a batch? The volume of the final popcorn would depend on the quality of the seeds, oil, and popping conditions.

So, I wonder what the 85oz. refers to. Would the bag hold 85oz. of uncooked corn, or is it some sort of displacement?

John - You are correct, it refers to the volume of unpopped corn.

Yes, that bag you described is an 85 ounce bag. It surely doesn't hold 85ozs of POPPED corn... Must be raw kernel measurement.
