I just saw this in today's Tennessean. The local business club in Grundy County has started up a new cinema in the auditorium of the old high school building. Click Here

This county or town has never had a cinema, and with the help of Regal, they finally got it.

Great story!

I'm personally fascinated by the idea of converting buildings not originally designed for motion picture exhibition into cinemas. I especially am fascinated by seeing an older building turned into a small movie theatre, such as the now gone Biograph Theatre in Washington, DC, that used to be (if my memory serves me well) an old street front auto dealership building. I know that there have been some pretty bad conversion jobs done with these types of projects but some are done very nicely.

Last summer my wife and I saw a still operating drive-in theatre in Ohio (I'd have to check my records at home to remember the exact town) that had been converted from a section of some type of industrial plant. The theatre is small but the field is ramped, a steel screen tower has been built, and the projection/concession building was converted from what appears to have once been a bath house.

Has anybody ever seen a book or article/s on motion picture exhibition venues that served as something else first?
