Hello, I work at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, California.

Last week there was a big story in the San Jose Mercury-News because the AMC-Mercado went to $9/adult.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, the usual price is around $8. The Sony Metreon charges $8.50, with a $5.50 matinee and $5.25 for seniors.

We charge $7.50 for adults after 5, with children 2-14 and seniors at $5.00. Before 5, everyone is $5.00

For popcorn (no refills):

small (30 oz) = $2.25
medium (85 oz) = $3.25
large (130 oz) = $4.00

For Cokes (no refills):

small (16 oz) = $2.00
medium (24 oz) = $2.50
large (32 oz) = $3.00

Candies go from $1.25 (Hot Tamales) to $2.50 (Lindt Swiss Chocolate bars).

What do you charge, and where is your theatre?

Thanks!

Kenn,

We are an arthouse in Santa Rosa (5 screens - anywhere from 5 to 8 titles per week).

Adults - $7.50
Seniors (55+) and Kids (12 and under) - $4.50
1st matinee of day $4.50
Tuesday is bargain day - $4.50 all seats all shows - around here we call it cheapskate day as the percap dives as well.

We also have a passport or discount card - 5 admissions for $27 paid in advance - good anytime except Friday and Sat. after 6:00pm.

Popcorn:
85 oz - $3.25
130 oz - $3.75
170 oz - $4.25
We are the only theatre in the county that uses real butter on our popcorn.

Soda:
22 oz - 2.75
32 oz - 3.25
44 oz - 4.25

Haagen Daz and Ben & Jerry's Ice cream bars - $3.00

Bagel Dogs - $3.50

Cookies - baked fresh locally by a local baker - $2.00

Candy $1.50/$2.00/$2.50/$3.00

Bottled Water (spring and mineral) $1.75

Smoothies (strawberry banana & mocha capucino) $3.50/16 oz.

Coffee/Tea - $1.50/12 oz.
Latte/Mocha/Cap - $3.00/16 oz.

Italian Soda - $2.75/22 oz.

Our prices tend to be lower than our competitions (The most outrageous is $5.50 for a 170 oz popcorn at the new 14 plex - all stadium & digital). We don't have a kiddie or combo deal - which annoys some of our senior customers. Our percap hovers around $1.50 - we are trying to get it to $1.65 but the mix of movies we are playing greatly affects the per cap.

By the way, how are things at the Grand Lake - its a great theatre.

I forgot to mention we sell all-beef hot-dogs (4 oz) for $2.50, but no nachos. Roger, the manager, told me the night janitors threatened to revolt if we got nachos.

No ice cream here either. But we just added cheese-filled hot pretzels, which are a big hit.

To Ky and everyone else, when you come to visit, introduce yourself. I work Friday to Monday at the theatre and temp elsewhere the rest. I'm sure Stephan, the shop steward, Randy, and Justin (our 100% union operators) would be pleased to meet you.

Dear god and I thought our prices were bad. Anyhow, how about everyone post their average per caps, that all that really matters in the concession stand. Carmike's goal is 2.09. Ours goes from 2.25-2.40 (during kiddie movies) as low as 1.65 (we got in big trouble for that day). Usually it hovers around 2.10 though. Tonight it was 2.00.

Side note: this afternoon (up till 5:30) the per cap was 2.29. I don't know what it was after the sevens, but as stated above it ended up being 2.00 for the night. Why is this you might ask? Probably becuase the idiots at the home office have handed us mandatory showtimes week after week for every new movie. Now half our movies (the busy half of course) start at 9:30. Translation-big glut of people coming in at once, none of them stopping for refreshmenst.

We're in a small town so our prices tend to be lower.

Adult - $5.25
High-school kids (with discount card) - $4.50 if they don't have the discount card, they pay adult price
Child (under 12) - $3.50

Popcorn: Ranges from $1.00 (24oz buttered) to $3.50 (160 oz. buttered) We charge the same whether they want butter or not.

Sodapop: 75¢ (16 oz) to $1.75 (44 oz) We also sell bottled water for 75¢.

Candy runs from $1.00 to $2.50 with a smattering of small kid-type items (tootsie rolls, etc) for 50¢.

I would dearly love to be able to get the prices some of you are charging! It just seems traditional that small towns have lower prices (we don't show many movies on the break, but we're only about 3 to 4 weeks behind the break, usually.)

Mike i think your gate prices are ok but couldn,t you raise your snack bar prices. I have run secound, discount and first run. In small towns and always kept the prices just below the big boys. But not that low. I really believe that the people will pay the price and if a few won,t the others that will buy will make up the differance.

You know, I have no clue. I don't think we've ever sat down and crunched the numbers. I just became the films chair this year. I'm curious to find out myself. I know that the kid and family films are by far the best for concession sales.
