Unlike most of Hollywood's offerings over this summer's blockbuster season, this low budget Mexican farce comedy has been packing out the 'plexes, so I decided that I had to find out what the fuss was about. The pic begins with a spoof MPAA-style rating card, which reads: "ADVERTENCIA! El protagonista de esta pelicula es un MACHISTA! HOMOFÓBICO! RETRÓGRADO!"

The plot is based around the wackiness that ensues as the protagonista in question has to process the revelation that his best friend is gay. If you're expecting a politically correct, macho apeman sees the light and transforms himself into a tofu-munching, Starbucks latte-sipping guy narrative, you're going to be disappointed. The average 15-year old would probably regard many of the jokes as childish. But the three leads are all strong, the pacing and timing of the gags is well done, and if jokes at the expense of the politically correct are your thing, you'll absolutely get your money's worth.

I noted with interest that the DCP has burnt in subtitles (LAS-en). I'm guessing that in the aftermath of the Attack on Titan fiasco, the post house that did the DCP realized that this would be an unusual example of a subtitled movie that would play widely, including in screens that might still be running older, Series 1 equipment, and decided to take no chances. That was a good call, IMHO.
