New England, 1971: husband and wife paranormal investigators are called upon to help another family who are bothered by things that go bump in the night inside their Rhode Island farmhouse.

****

For those who like a scary movie without the blood and guts, The Conjuring is a pretty safe ticket, in fact I can’t imagine why it earned an “R” rating. There is nothing especially new and different about this picture; there is a lot of the doors-that-slam-shut-by-themselves, chairs-that-move-on-their-own kind of thing, as well as the obligatory haunted armoire (when did THAT get to be such a horror film cliché?). There’s also a strange sub-plot about a haunted doll that seems to have worked its way in from another movie. It’s all pretty suspenseful, though, and the director keeps things tense and moving along, there aren’t a lot of dull spots. No dick-brained teens, either, the leads are played by industry veterans Lili Taylor and Vera Farmiga who are very good, as are the young actresses that play the family’s imperiled daughters. Presented in glorious 2D, and worth a matinee ticket at least. If you go, listen for the movie's last line (delivered by Farmiga), a cleverly done tip-off to a potential sequel.
