Today at Regal 15 in Eugene, #3, 35mm. The flickering dimmed wall sconce light was a nice complement to the wavering image brightness on the screen (unstable xenon arc?). One of the reels was color-timed way green from the rest of the movie.

The movie was not horrible but fell far short of being great for me. Everyone was trying and all that but it just doesn't rise above the level of "average". Some awkwardly-staged scenes and odd dialog. Next time, more about what happened with the meltdown and less boring love story.

What the heck is with the old guy doing the bird whistle hand gesture thing? Several times. Is that like a gang sign only for seniors over the age of 80?

I thought this was a very good looking film, especially the arial fly-bys of the New York skyscrapers. This, however, does not make a good movie. There was too much financial jargon, and the basic personal story was nothing special.
Viewed at Motion Picture Academy's Goldwyn Theater, digital projection.

Performed/written superbly, chemistry/awkwardness between characters was right on. Some cool video effects here and there as well. Worth a watch for people who enjoy dialogue and dramatic films.

Seen on Delta flight 178 from Portland to Amsterdam (an Airbus A330), night of Jan 31 to 1 Feb ... so basically, the less said about the 'presentation', the better, except to note that even if the advent of widescreen TVs and the DVD has thankfully made panning and scanning a thing of the past on terra firma, the practice still appears to be alive and well at 35,000 feet.

As sequels go, this was an intelligent one and worked pretty well, I thought; although the contrived Hollywood happy ending was, well, contrived. The updating of the story was believable, and the film's basic point - that the excesses of the 1980s came back in the late '00s, but just in a slightly different form - was one I found myself able to buy. My only misgiving was that Michael Douglas acted everybody else off the screen so comprehensively that all the other characters seemed wooden and unconvincing. In particular, the attempt to portray Jake as being both a mercenary capitalist in Gordon Gekko's mould, but also with an ethical streak (all the stuff about renewable energy) didn't work for me at all.
