Today, The History Channel is running "The Great Escape" weekend, under History vs. Hollywood as hosted by Ed Hermann.

Prequel to the film was a 1 hr. documentary hosted by Burt Rynnolds.

Very interesting. Participants in the actual escape were consulted for the film. The Stalag Luft and tunnels were authentically reproduced.

With the exception of the American escapees and the Steve McQueen motorcycycle chase...and the compilation of several people into a few characters, the movie was pretty much authentic, according to the actual participants.

The murder of the "50" was authorized by Hitler and Himmler, themselves...but after the war those responsible for carrying out the orders were hunted down...with the exception of 1, all were fouynd guilty in a subsequent war crimes trial and subsequently hanged.

Kinda funny that The Histry Channel thought they found an editing error in McQueens motor cycle chase. One minute he is in German uniform disguise, and the next he is in civilian cloths. But if you watch closly, there is no error. He simply put the German uniform on over his civilian cloths, and there is a split second scene where it clearly shows him removing the German uniform.
