i saw this at my location (luna on sx) and for the first time in a while, i enjoyed the cinema experience!.
i thoroughly enjoyed this film, which stars sissy spacek and tom wilkinson. it had a very simple story, but through great writing and direction it became a very complex and interesting film.
i'm finding this to be a hard film to promote to customer's over the phone/counter, if i tell them what it's about, i find i have to give away info which you shouldn't know i.e. about the son!, while it's not crucial i still find that it spoils the first part of the film.
a definite contender for best actress and actor oscars!

I caught up with In the Bedroom today, too. It is a fantastic film with some unbelieveable acting. Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek and marisa Tomei were really incredible. I'm not going to mention anything about the story. I didn't know much going into it, and I think that made seeing the film a better experience. See this one.

What I really liked about the film was the quiet intensity. I really felt what was going through the long passages of time with the two parents, and this section was told in purely cinematic terms, without the usual histronics of "scripted" dialog. Some may pass this off as TV movie material, but if they wait till home video, they will miss the emotional impact that can only be had in a theatre.

"Quiet intensity". What a PERFECT description of this flick.

Like the others, I hesitate to say anything detailed about the plot for fear it will destroy part of it. What I will say is that I enjoyed this one very much. Excellent acting throughout from Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek, Marisa Tomei and as the other posts above this one forgot about, Nick Stahl. (Remember him from "The Man Without a Face" with Mel Gibson?)

Yep. Likewise "Monster's Ball". Both are films that really need to be seen with an audience, not in a living room.

I just showed this DVD to my parents and none of us had seen it before. We all thought it was a good movie. I hadn't read the reviews here before seeing it, but I also agree that "quiet intensity" is a good descritpion of the movie. For people who have never seen it before, there are plenty of places where just wondering what is about to be seen creates some mental energy that would probably be lost on a second viewing.
