I hadn't intended to see this one, as I was not expecting it to be worth the time to sit down and view it. However, I am required to see to it that all prints at our theater are run at least once before being shown to the public.
I had intended to only watch the previews, and the first few minutes, then periodically check back on the film, and I never got up until the credits were on! It actually managed to catch and hold my interest.

Was it an outstanding film?
No.
But it was a lot more interesting and enjoyable than finishing up my other 'Thursday tasks' for that shift... i.e. breaking down "Gone In 60 Seconds"

Okay, so what's this picture about? Sounds like a Western.

I am a huge fan of the ultraviolent genre, and this movie didn't do that badly for me. I thought that the way the filmmakers simply jumped into the lives of Parker and Longbaugh was a good way to start the movie. That was alos how the following fifteen minutes seemed to progress: simply jumping in at a point.
A lot of the scenes that follow don't seem to have any cohereance on that point, and the characters are rather underdeveloped.
As the complex plot of a misunderstood kidnapping unfolds, I found myself more and more disoriented with the complex plot that they tried to insert in breaks in the violence.
In fact, the only thing that anchors the movie is violence! The shootout finale seems to catch the eye of most people I talk to, as does the the ending that could have seemingly been more than it was.

I'm hesitant to give a lot of details of the plot, only that it involves the kidnapping of a pregnant woman who is a surrogate mother for a rich family. The other characters include the OB/GYN who is more than he seems, the bodyguards who are more than they seem, and the rich wife who is more than she seems. With all of these larger than expected character profiles, the movie starts to get overinflated, except for Benicio Del Toro and James Cann, who seem to have the perfect crime relationship (don't trust each other).

I would say see it, if only for the epic gunplay and to give the thick plot a chance.

I guess that means it's not a western then.

Finally caught this one on DVD. Nothing extra special about the disc, though.

El Mariachi meets Excess Baggage with a dash of Pulp Fiction. All from the man who brought you The Usual Suspects.

3 out of 5. Worth watching.
