Okay, I'm annoyed. I saw Inside Out about a month ago (it was excellent), and the short in front of it was called Lava, which I also liked a lot. Inside Out was in flat, but Lava was in Scope placed inside a flat frame. And because the Event Cinema I was at didn't close their masking, there was lots of black all around the very small picture. I got in touch with our Sony/Disney rep here in NZ, they checked with the big boys at Disney, and that is how it will be distributed.

I'd rather have it be the other way around with the whole thing being in scope and then the flat image placed in the scope frame, but the best case would be to have 10 seconds of black between the short and the feature and have theaters put in a cue to change the ratio. Or maybe even distribute the short as a different DCP file all together.

Anyways, it's annoying.

They could do the same anyway, I remember setting a cue to open the masking on 'The Simpsons" and another one I can't remember now. What is the difference? If the short was supplied as a separate CPL, chances are they wouldn't show it altogether.

Can anyone here advise: Does the AAM TMS (which Event uses) have any facility to allow for shorts before features? I don't use AAM so I'm not sure, but I can see how this would be problematic with TCC. I'm guessing here, but perhaps the issue stems back to an inability to easily automate this process? A decent excuse? Maybe not, but certainly a reality in un-manned booths
