Hello,

I've been asked to investigate adding Blu-ray projection capability to one of our two digital houses for the occasional title that's not available on film or as a DCP.

Both houses are equipped with Series 1 NEC DLP projectors. One features a NEC NC2500S (2008 vintage), Dolby 3D and DSS100/DSP100 units, a Dolby DMA8+, and a CP-200 processor. The other house has a NEC NC2500S-A (2009 vintage), Dolby 3D with a DSS200, a USL DAX-602 or DAX-802 (don't recall which offhand), and a CP-65. Both houses are setup for dual DLP and 35mm operation and must remain that way for now.

I've sourced a new 2010 model year Blu-ray player (Panasonic DMP-BD85K) with the ability to output 1080p via HDMI or 1080i via component. The player can output audio via S/PDIF coaxial or optical, or via discrete 7.1 RCA.

Initially I figured the first house would be easier to connect into due to the optical input on the DMA8+; however, I'm concerned the older projector may not be HDCP compliant.

Which house will be easier (read: less expensive) to equip with Blu-ray capability? Are either of the projectors HDCP compliant? If not, can a component video to DVI cable be used? Is a video scaler required or recommended? All recommendations specific and general are appreciated.

I also work with a 2500, but a 2006 vintage unit and we do our preshows through the unit.

You can get a scaler from Gefen that has connections from outside sources that would connect to the DVI input of the projector.

Then just assign a macro to a free button on the side of the machine to use that DVI input.

Again: HD-Fury is the way to go. For some of the older machines, a new GoreBoard upgrade is an option which will add HDMI/HDCP compatibility - but that costs 50times as much as the HD-Fury. Check with NEC the board revisions of your machines and either internal or external (Scaler) analog I/O options - there are addon I/O boards available.
