SHOGUN, the 1980 television miniseries was just released on Blu Ray and I am now watching it. It is a fantastic show based on early seventeenth century Japanese history from a novel by James Clavell. I watched the complete television presentation when it was first aired by NBC in September 1980 and later again on VHS, DVD and on BD and the current version is the best it had ever looked.

The story opens in 1600 when only two war lords ruled Japan. Lord Toronaga and Lord Ishido. In actual Japanese history, Hideyoshi Toyotomi had just passed away and his son, Hideyori Toyotomi succeeded him based on the timeline of SHOGUN. I do not know if Lord Ishido in the tv series is suppose to be Hideyoshi or Hideyori. Lord Toronaga is based on the first Tokugawa shogun, Iyeyasu whose family ruled Japan for over 250 years .

As I had mention, the picture quality is fantastic and is in the 1:33.1 ratio in a three disc set. On Blu Ray, SHOGUN is in three parts and each running about three hours. On disc one is a 83 minute documentary on the making of SHOGUN and disc two and three features other interesting bonus features.
