Sony released in Japan the first blu-ray disc with their SBMV (Super Bit Mapping for Video) scheme allowing for superior color gradation quality.

After the marketing hype is gone, it's just a nice algorithm for 10bits-to-8bits dithering that survives compression well.

Sorry, haven't found pages in English with much info.

Sony Japan held a press conference today (November 2008) in Tokyo to unveil a total of 6 new Blu-ray recorders [JP] and 2 Blu-ray players [JP], which will become available in Nippon in the next few weeks (no word about markets outside Japan yet).

7 of these 8 models are equipped with Sony’s new CREAS chip, which upscales 8/10-bit TVs to 14-bit through SBMV (Super Bit Mapping for Video).

It's moot, but I guess in a way we could say that home techonology is already at 14 bits (fake) level.

And that lease on the 2K 12bits Barco still have a way to go...
