After all these years I've finally gotten a recording of The Mysterians. As a kid I probably saw this Toho production a zillion times at the local kids matinee, in it's initial release. Pretty scary stuff back then.

This DVD is different from the American release. Apparently they used the original Japanese version for a master. Probably couldn't find an American print that wasn't beet red. Anyway the title credits are all in Japanese, with only the title itself having a subtitle (using english 5.1). They have done a new english voice over track, which is just awful. It's almost as though they wanted it to sound funny, as they use some people with very high pitched and lispy voices. About half way through we stopped and went to Japanese 5.1 with subtitles. We found it much better viewed that way.

The transfer is in scope, although some of the scenes look a little squished with cars looking stubby and people looking just a little skinny. It also looks as though this might have been an attempt at restoration, as from scene to scene the film quality changes, most of it being pretty good for an almost 50 year old film.

Not exactly what I remember, but worth the purchase price
