This weeks Video Biz magazine had an article about how these self destructing DVD work. It appears that the reflective surface is printed with a coating that starts decaying when exposed to the air. The way this these will work is that they will be sold in air tight packaging, and 48 hours after the package is opened, the reflective surface will be so damaged that they will no longer play.

My question is why? At the proposed $7 retail price, do they really think there is a market for this?
