In light of this film's very strong French cast (Depardieu, Holgado, Pinon etc) I decided to give this period drama a look. The French do a lot of these period dramas and most I find quite dull but this one stood out from the crowd. Apparently it is based on a true story.

Essentially the drama surrounds a husband who leaves his wife, children and village suddenly and returns several years later. However it is really him or an imposter?

The film keeps the audience on tenderhooks and you're never really sure of the answer until the end of the film. The performances are good although the fact that the film is predominanly shot in the village makes the film look like a stage play at times.

Apparently The Return of Martin Guerre was remade by Hollywood as Sommersby (with Jodie Foster) although I have not yet seen this film.

If you like intrigue and good drama this is worth a look. The version I saw was dubbed but unlike many dubbing efforts the dubbing was half reasonable.

Verdict 7 stars out of 10.

cheers Peter
