The 70mm-Equipped Cinemas in North America, circa 1985

Compiled by Michael Coate

Why 1985? Because 1985 was the year which featured the highest number of 70mm releases (in North America, at least). By my count there were twenty-three confirmed 70mm releases during the 1985 calendar year (plus at least two re-releases), and seven of the year’s ten top-grossing films were released with 70mm prints including the year’s Oscar-winner for Best Picture. As well, the year prior (1984) saw the highest number of 70mm prints to ever circulate — 900 prints between sixteen titles — with about half of that output released late in the year and playing into the early months of ‘85.

So, the conclusion to be drawn here is that the mid-1980s ought to be considered the peak period for 70mm (as an exhibition format) and the point in time the industry was a well-oiled machine in regard to large format in so far as exhibitor and studio support and the laboratories’ ability to manufacture large 70mm print runs in a timely fashion.

The known 70mm-equipped cinemas in North America circa 1985…

*Two (or more) screens in complex equipped with 70mm capability

Notes:

There probably exist a handful of venues cited in this work that during timeframe being studied did not actually possess the ability to screen 70mm because the once-installed gear had been removed and decommissioned or relocated to another venue. The still-open status (in 1985) of these venues and the lack of any confirmation of such a removal situation explains the inclusion.

IMAX and other large format special venue installations have not been cited. In addition it is possible some such venues at the time may have had the ability to also screen 5-70 prints.

Venues known to have closed during the 1985 calendar year have been included.

Studio and private screening room shave not been included.

In the case of venues that during the 1985 calendar year incurred an ownership change or renovation resulting in additional auditoria, effort has been made to cite such details based upon the venue’s status at end of the year.

The Cineplex Odeon chain acquired the Plitt chain in 1985 though the name change did not immediately take effect which explains the retained usage of the Plitt name for the applicable venues.

California>Hollywood>Cineplex Odeon Beverly Center (Screens 1 & 2 = THX). Actually this was a 1987 install, so it might not work for you depending on what "circa" allows for.

Vancouver — Cineplex Odeon’s Varsity Twin
Varsity was a single screen house. I'm not certain it had 70mm capability in 1985. It only had one 70mm screening of Hamlet in early 1997.

It might be cool to add an denotation to any sites that still are operating with 70mm capabilities, if there are any.

Maryland:

There is no "Bethesda Mall" It should read K-B Montgomery Mall (triplex).

Virginia:

Tyson's Corner (NTI) had 70mm, I believe in some form...there were various Tyson Corner theatres but it would be the NTI one that had 70mm via Bauer U2 projectors. That said, it is possible there was a time after the various splittings that Tyson's was 70mm-less though NTI's Tyson-4 (used to be a twin) had 70mm on screen 1, verifiable by checking Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when I personally ran in 70mm there...Unfortunately, I cannot verify equipment before that time or in 1985 as I had no connection with the company then (I was with K-B until 2/3rds though 1987).

While I can't guarantee that these New York theaters had 70mm precisely in 1985 (or that all existed at that time), they did have 70mm at some point:

City Cinemas Gramercy
City Cinemas 86th Street Twin (still open as a Quad)
Cineplex Odeon Chelsea Cinema 9 (now Cinépolis) xxDidn't open until '89
Cineplex Odeon Regency
Cineplex Odeon/Clearview 1st & 62nd 6
Cineplex Odeon Park & 86th St
Guild 50th Street
Cineplex Odeon Encore Worldwide 6 (now a legit theater)xxx didn't open until '89
City Cinemas Sutton

The Loews 19th St East that someone else mentioned didn't open until 1989.

Filling in some detail on Steve's post

The Bauer U2's were at the Neighborhood Theaters (NTI) Tyson Cinema, which was not in the Tyson Corner Shopping Center, but down the street about a mile. It had 70mm as a single. It became the Tyson Twin in 1983. As far as I recall they kept their U2's (and thus 70mm) after the twinning, but I could be wrong.

The Tyson 1 & 2 was in the original Tyson Corner's Shopping Center. It was remodeled into the Tyson 1-4. I mostly remember it as a twin with carbon arcs and manual changeovers. I don't recall any 70mm, but I left the area in 1985.

The difficult thing is Mike's list is dated 1985, and we don't know all the corporate moves that took place in the years since. I'm unfamiliar with the Walter Reade company. When I lived in NYC Cineplex Odeon had taken over theaters like the Ziegfeld. City Cinemas took over a number of screens apparently run by RKO.

I can personally vouch for the Gramercy Theater on 23rd Street, having seen a few movies there. I watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 70mm there as well as the 70mm blow-up of Fantasia in 1990. I guess the question is when the 70mm equipment was installed in that theater. City Cinemas ran that one when I lived in NYC.

In the late 1980's a number of theaters opened and closed in that part of Manhattan. The Loews 19th Street East Six opened around the 1988-89 time frame. I remember portions of Big being filmed at a night spot close to that location back then. Actually several key locations of Big were shot in that neighborhood. I watched The Hunt for Red October and Godfather Part III in 70mm there, among other 35mm movies like Silence of the Lambs. The Loews Village Theatre VII opened in 1991 IIRC; I watched Thelma & Louise in Dolby SR on its THX-certified screen. It was an early adopter Dolby Digital screen. School of Visual Arts took over and remodeled the old 23rd Street triplex. I saw Lethal Weapon 2 in 70mm at that theater. Chelsea Cinemas opened nearby the same summer (1989) and Lethal Weapon 2 was wrongly advertised as being at that theater in 70mm. The older 23rd Street theater had it.

One NYC theater I see missing from the list in NYC is the 57th Street Playhouse. But was it 70mm equipped in 1985? I watched Bernardo Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky in 1.85:1 70mm at that theater. I thought the cinematography (via Vittorio Storaro) was very good.

Because I operated these myself, the Fox Fourplex in Lubbock Texas in 1985 had a set of Norelco DP70s. However the only 70mm showing the theater ever ran was Brainstorm in 1983. These would come out in 1987 when Mann Theaters bought two sets of Potts 5 stack platters and the entire booth ran on Ballentyne Pro 35's.

Noret Theater's Winchester Twin did indeed have two Century JJ projectors, but in 1984 it was decided to move one of them to the single screen Cinema West to run Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom in 70mm. Weeks prior to opening, Noret requested the movie be booked at the Winchester Twin instead. Paramount put the movie back up for bid and UA Theaters outbid Noret. Southplains Cinema did not have 70mm.

TL;DR version: Mann Fox Theater and Noret Cinema West in 1985 had 70mm capability in Lubbock as well as Winchester Twin.

MISSISSIPPI
Columbus — Malco’s Fiesta Drive-in

For those interested, the Fiesta had a pair of DP70's. Those projectors were replaced in the early 70's with a single XL and a platter.

Nashville's Belle Meade had the projectors left over from many years previous, did not have any processor, and indeed only Optical Mono worked. No lens, splicer, or 70mm capable platter.

^ It was, screen #2 which had the original proscenium. Whether it was in 1985, I don't know, but it was in the later Eighties.

For Illinois, Plitt River Oaks (Calumet City) had 70mm both on the original D150 house and #2 across the street. (First week of Raiders they shared the same 70mm print with ushers ferrying the doubled up reels back and forth!).

M&R River Run, Lansing, IL (later Loews) had 70mm on one screen. Not sure if it was ever used. Theatre was just across the creek behind original River Oaks building. (This theatre is still in operation as Cinema 8 while all vestiges of River Oaks -- ultimately 14 screens in 5 buildings -- is gone.)

The Hinsdale Theater in Illinois was also 70mm equipped from about 1989 until it closed. Pair of DP-70's from a UA House in Milwaukee. The first 70mm run there was Short Cuts, I believe in 1991 as a First Run show. I do know they ran at least two other 70mm shows but it was after I moved to Utah.

Louis,
I live right down the street from the Belle Meade. Its still intact and the last use it saw was a book store in it's lobby. They did put in a Smart 70mm processor(probably not a smart idea) for one of the big 70mm films. There was an article about it in Box Office back In the day.
