I’m beta testing a forthcoming article. Feedback appreciated, especially from those who reside or work in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thank you in advance.

Showcase Presentations in San Francisco

A Chronology of Large Format and Roadshow Exhibition, 1953-Present

Compiled by Michael Coate

A work in progress. Please do not forward or re-publish.

What follows is a chronology of (1) 5-perf 70-millimeter, (2) Cinerama, and (3) roadshow presentations in San Francisco from 1953.

Part 1: The Cinemas

The 70mm-equipped cinemas in San Francisco are/were the following. The surrounding Bay Area counties have not been included (except for the northern portion of San Mateo County which borders San Francisco). See also: Showcase Presentations in Marin County (soon), Showcase Presentations in Oakland and the East Bay (soon), and Showcase Presentations in San Jose and the Silicon Valley.

The cinemas will be described in greater detail in a forthcoming revision. (The asterisked cinemas did not have 70mm capability but have been included since they screened some reserved-seat engagements during the timeframe of this study.)

Part 2: The Presentations

This is primarily a title-based chronology. The project focuses on the exhibition of films and thus the photography processes and print particulars of the featured titles (O-neg source, inter-neg source, blow-up, pillarboxed, letterboxed, Dolby A, Dolby SR, baby boom, split surround, digital sound, etc.) have not been cited except in cases of notable firsts. (Much of these tech details can be found elsewhere on this website.)

The majority of the titles featured in this chronology showcased some flavor of high-quality magnetic stereophonic sound (four-track for 35mm, six-track for 70mm, seven-track for Cinerama). The 70mm prints issued from the mid-1970s typically were encoded with Dolby Noise Reduction and often included “baby boom” low-frequency enhancement and, occasionally, split surrounds. Most recently-struck 70mm prints featured digital sound (DTS aka Datasat).

This draft excludes IMAX and other Special Venue presentations. (Such details might be added in a forthcoming revision.)

The roadshows (i.e. reserved-seat engagements) are listed in bold. Roadshows, much like a stage show, featured reserved seating, increased admission price (and sold in advance), were shown an average of only ten times per week, and often included an overture, intermission, entr’acte and/or exit music. Souvenir program booklets were typically sold, as well. (Pre-1953 roadshow releases have not been cited in this work.)

Sneak preview and test screenings (of which there were many, especially at Northpoint) have not been included except in cases where such a screening was publicly promoted and included presentation notations in the advertising.

m/o = a move-over engagement (i.e. a continuation of a booking from another cinema)

SFIFF = San Francisco International Film Festival

Note that some of the titles included in this listing were presented in 35mm (or, recently, DCP) during the latter week(s) of their engagement due to print damage and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm (or DCP) portion of the engagement has been included in the duration figure.

Also, regarding roadshow presentations, the reserved-seat policy, in some instances, was relaxed during the summer and/or latter weeks of the run. Any non-roadshow portion of such an engagement has been included in the duration figure.

The Opera House items, in regard to the "Napoleon" restoration, were listed with a question mark ("70mm Triptych sequence?") because I, too, question it. However, a projectionist friend swears that some runs of that release included a mixture of 35mm and 70mm reels.

Anyway, I included it ("Napoleon") to draw attention to it in the hope the projection details can be ascertained*, whereas if I had left it off then the Opera House run might've never crossed anyone's mind.

*Bob Harris, you out there? How 'bout anyone from Boston Light & Sound, who I think did (some) of the "Napoleon" set-ups?

The final reel of Napoleon was available in both 70mm and 3x35mm, depending on what equipment was available.

Thanks for another greatly researched informative list.

> I notice the "Hateful 8" at Kabuki has a " ? " next to the dates.
Unlike some places that opened it with at least one showing on
Christmas Eve, Kabuki did not want to give up that auditorium
for one H-8 show since they were selling out with the Star Wars
flick in that audtitorium & several others.
So H-8 opened on 12-25, and the last show was on Jan 10, 2016.

I can confirm this since I worked every show during that period.

In June 2017 I was told I'd be working "Dunkirk" there, but about a week
later I was informed that the SF Bay area was 'oversaturated' with 70mm
Dunkirk screenings, & so Kabuki wasn't going to run it, & I wound up in
San Antonio running Dunkirk for just short of a month at a theater there.

Your list also solves a 'mystery' I've been wondering about for some time,
concerning 70mm shows at The Presidio Theater in San Francisco.
(The one on Chestnut St, & not the one on the Presidio Army Base)

I knew they at one time had 70mm capability, but I'd never run into
anyone who had ever actually SEEN a 70mm show there, nor had I ever
come across any old newspaper ads as to what they might have played
there. But I knew they had a 35/70 "JJ" with the mag penthouse, as well
as a CP-200 with all the mag pre-amps, etc. Their screen also had side &
top maskings to handle 70mm aspect ratio.

When the theater changed ownership & was cut into a 4-plex around 2003/4,
the "JJ" & CP-200 got moved downstairs from the original booth to a new booth
& was still projecting in their largest auditorium (the only decent auditorium
there after they cut the place up) & on the original screen, albeit from a much
shorter throw. But the mag sound was never re-conneted after the move, so
I don't believe any 70mm was done after the theater remodeling.

The JJ was taken out when they went digital around 2012, and sat in storage
for a couple of years. I eventually cosmetically restored it for them and it's
now on display on a landing of one of the stairways leading up to one of the
balcony auditoriums. The CP 200 was taken out of service, but I can't remember
if it's still in the theater somewhere. I acquired their 70mm splicer, as well as
the original 70mm lens & some assorted JJ spare parts & pieces.

Have there been any 70mm screenings in San Francisco since "Roma" earlier this year?

Another question:

Is anyone familiar with the Palace of Fine Arts and the type of projection gear they used during the 1980s? I ask because a couple titles that might have screened there in 70mm included a benefit premiere of the '83 re-issue of "Around the World in 80 Days" and the world premiere of "A View to a Kill.”

Regards Palace of Fine Arts, 70mm. there was standard 35mm equipment more or less planted there by Bartel Audio Visual, a local rental firm. Dick Bartel is still with us but his memory is worse than before. Napoleon played there with all the bells and whistles but no 70 I can recall. "Kronos" showed there with 70mm modified Ballantyes from Iwerks. Picture and track. Early '80's. Maybe Baraka as well but have no info.

Michael, forgive me if this is already on your list or Carl's (I glanced and didn't see it) but in June of 2018 I went to SFMOMA and unexpectedly ran into a 20-min 70MM projection of a recreation of some scenes from the memorial cross-country train ride of Robert F Kennedy's body. It was in continuous operation, with a break for the film to rewind between each run. It was cool because the projector was in a plexi box and was really part of the exhibit.

hi webster! apologies for not replying to your email earlier this year... it got buried.

much as i try to keep track of all the film being run in the bay area, this one is news to me. sfmoma's website frustratingly tends to bury things like this (like the warhol films currently being run).

was the film rewound automatically through the projector or was there a human intervention each time?
