Hi all,

Trying to create a list of films made after O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU that were finished without a DI. Trying to limit this to films where DI would be considered a "normal" workflow (so no Bollywood or experimental films). If a film used DI for some effects shots but not the whole film, that counts too.

Here's what we've come up with so far, corrections and additions welcome!:

2001
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: AI (Steven Spielberg, 2001) unconfirmed
THE CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION* (Woody Allen, 2001)
MOULIN ROUGE (Baz Luhrmann, 2001) unconfirmed
TROUBLE EVERY DAY (Claire Denis, 2001)

2002
FRIDAY NIGHT (Claire Denis, 2002)
HOLLYWOOD ENDING (Woody Allen, 2002)
INSOMNIA (Christopher Nolan, 2002)
LAUREL CANYON (Lisa Cholodenko, 2002)
MINORITY REPORT (Steven Spielberg, 2002) unconfirmed
PUNCH DRUNK LOVE (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2002)

2003
ANYTHING ELSE (Woody Allen, 2003)
MYSTIC RIVER (Clint Eastwood, 2003)

2004
INTRUDER, THE (Claire Denis, 2004)
MELINDA AND MELINDA (Woody Allen, 2004)
MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Clint Eastwood, 2004) unconfirmed

2007
CASSANDRA'S DREAM (Woody Allen, 2007)
THERE WILL BE BLOOD (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007)

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (Woody Allen, 2008)

2009
DARK KNIGHT, THE (Christopher Nolan, 2008) IMAX Prints went through DMR fr 35mm scenes
WHATEVER WORKS (Woody Allen, 2009)

2010
YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER (Woody Allen, 2010)

2012

I consider MUNICH (Steven Spielberg, 2005) to be another addition as it was edited on a Moviola. I don't think Spielberg ever opted for a digital intermediate until INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008).

I may have heard the 35mm prints of DJANGO UNCHAINED (Quentin Tarantino, 2012) didn't use a DI, but the DCP version did.

I like the gain of resolution a movie shot on celluloid has when ignoring the DI process, yet sacrificing the wondrous tech of digital coloring. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES looked fantastic in 15/70, as well as 35mm, but the 35mm scenes looked better on the 35mm prints. While the IMAX scenes on a 15/70 print are yet to be surpassed in clarity, they shrunk down nicely on the 35mm print. It possibly has to be the best 35mm print I ever saw, especially coming from the digital age.

THE MASTER in 70mm was the best looking movie I saw in that format, although it was partially shot in 35mm. But that is not saying a lot since the only other 70mm movie I saw was 2001 A Space Odyssey, which still was outstanding, but some of the elements have degraded.

hi julian,

this is a topic close to my heart but i rarely come here anymore since digital topics started overtaking film ones. it's a difficult question since credits will never state that a di was not used, only that one was, so one has to make judgments by eye which can be hard to do when the projection is not very good. if i get a chance i'll pore through my notes for some additions to your list (which vastly understates the non-di films since 2000). for now i'll mention kenneth lonergan's margaret (2005/2008/2011: difficult post-production) which i consider to be possibly the last film masterpiece.

why exclude bollywood though? di's have steamrolled through india just as in the u.s.

Some I recall:

The Fast & the Furious (2001)
Hannibal (2001)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Swordfish (2001)
Blood Work (2002)
Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood (2002)
Red Dragon (2002)
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Matchstick Men (2003)
X-Men 2 (2003)
Birth (2004)
I Heart Huckabees (2004)
Hidalgo (2004)
Jersey Girl (2004)
Team America (2004)
Wimbledon (2004)
Dark Water (2005)
Must Love Dogs (2005)
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)
War of the Worlds (2005)
The Prestige (2006)
American Gangster (2007)
Breach (2007)
License to Wed (2007)
Margot at the Wedding (2007)
Over Her Dead Body (2008)
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009)
The Greatest (2009)
Inception (2010)

You're right about AI, Minority Report and Million Dollar Baby. Spielberg's first DI was The Terminal (2004), and he skipped it on his next two movies. Eastwood's first was on Flags of Our Fathers (2006).
