So is it true that this will only be playing in 35MM?. No digital projection. This is what I have been hearing from people I know. If so, the theaters that have digital only are screwed.....lol

Well, from what I have seen, a local movie theatre here in San Diego (Ultra Star Cinemas) will be showing the movie in Digital and not in 35MM.

It is "film preferred". If your complex is 100% digital with no film capability or if the film capability is only on smaller screens they are putting it out in digital.

Originally, Steven Spielberg wanted it to be film only but he was shown how it looked in digital and approved it to be released in digital (similar to how he had to approve DTS before it was used on Jurassic Park).

I don't think the situation is as similar as it would seem.

Steven Spielberg personally invested in DTS to get the company started. He isn't part owner of a digital projection oriented company.

I think this falls more along the lines of the stories of Spielberg testing out Cinema Digital Sound for Hook. Those tests didn't go so well and may have been one of the key things that inspired him to get behind DTS' dual system approach for the release of Jurassic Park.

At least 2K d-cinema works. Whether it works better than 35mm is another issue.

I wonder if you know if Speilberg isn't still a holder in DTS.....? If he still is that WOULD make him part owner in a company that makes servers for D-Cinema.

DTS sold its digital cinema business division to Beaufort California Inc., a division of British Beaufort International Group to concentrate on home theatre. Therefore DTS no longer makes digital cinema equipment.

Paramount (the distributor IIRC) is requiring that two screens play IJ4 in 35mm, while the rest are in digital; I have the hard drive in my hand, so yes, it is digital. I almost want to post a notice to forewarn people about the 35mm usage in those two theaters....

(Watch out for Joe - you leave the back door open and you have the front door closed, he'll definitely take advantage of that opened door and punish you for leaving the door open [Big Grin] ..)

There is no two screen rule as we are playing it on 4 digital screens and 1 35mm screen.

If I had to speculate I'd say its based purely on seating capacity. It will play in the bigest auditoriums not matter which format they are-if they're film then perhaps they will play film, if their digital only then it will be digital.

And what exactly would you be warning them about? Is your 35mm presentation THAT crappy?

Plus, if the movie looks as "good" as people here are saying it won't matter if it's 35MM or digital... because it'll look like crap either way.

I compared the 35mm to the digital print side by side, going back and forth. 35mm beat the pants off the digital print, check out the seen when Jones, Ravenwood, and Mutt are tied up in the back of the duce & 1/2. The flesh tones, and colors. digital too much red, 35mm well balanced. (this is just one example)

Your post made me curios so I did the same thing as you, 'side by side', and I must say, I noticed no different whatsoever. In all seriousness you might want to make sure your digital print is being played in the right format. If that isn't the problem you should probably have a tech come out and take a look at your projector, sounds like you have a setup issue or possibly even a light engine problem.

Gee, problems with a digital projector that's not much more than practically new out of the box and it's already got problems....is that possible? I thought digital was perfect all the time. What is the warantee on those things? And if it did have a problem, would it be fixed free of charge? Would the theatre get a loaner while it's being repaired? If not, any idea what would be the usual hourly rate for a digital technician to come out to make repairs and alignments?
