When I've called lately they seem to be in the just barely hanging on mode, Betty seems at times not to have it all together. Haven't heard of a new installation of their equipment in years. We've got a pair of Xenex Is. Is this when we should make sure we have whatever spares we'll ever need before they go?

I think it is premature to count them out.

Betty is no spring chicken but is still with it, especially if you knew just how old she really is.

Remember the factory has 10 hour days; is off on Friday.

I do know they have had one very large customer in recent months; however, it is not clear if he pays well. This would be a problem for any company.

They do quite a business in other-than-cinema areas.

All of us could stand more good, paying customers. Louis

I kinda agree with Bill on this one. I'm not sure that she is with it either. Having known her for many years and having been to the factory many, many times things have been seemingly getting stranger and stranger lately. We ordered a teflon bushing for a Xenex-1 a couple of weeks ago... no problem getting the part except for the call from her asking for our UPS account number to ship it on. She said they don't use UPS any longer because of "all the trucking companies being bought up". Any company of that sort has to have either UPS or Fed-Ex to be in buisness. Makes absolutely no sense at all and having done alot of buisness with that company in past years it sure seems pretty strange to me.

I guarantee you that if they didn't have those Gov't contracts thay would have been gone long ago.

Didn't know they were still in business. The theatre I work at has 3 Xenex I's and 4 Xenex II's. We get extremely good service out of them (especially the Xenex I's). We also have a Xenex Pup laying around, but it hasn't been used in quite some number of years.

I ordered a couple teflon bushings last week and got the same UPS story as Mark. I had to give her our Fed Ex account number to ship with. A shipper doesn't need his customers account numbers with UPS or Fed Ex unless his own account is cut off. Betty had to get all the answers at least twice before she could get them right, at least she read them back to be certain. I'd guess she's mid 80s.

What other stuff do they make?

I know several companys (large and small) that will not either ship or recieve deliverys from certain trucking firms so that is not new
I will not use UPS for sometime now because of there totaly unflexable scheduling of someone at the address must be available to sign for it between 8am and 6pm which is not possible in many theatres

Of course the common cure for that ailment is to ship it to the Managers or Projectionists house. Very commonly done in the U.S. because of the problem you mentioned. Also in many remote UPS locations they will actually accept a key to the theatre and leave the packages inside the front door, or at the closest open buisness that will accept them as per your request. All the UPS delivery people I've come in contact with in the Mountain States seem to go above and beyond the call of duty [thumbsup] .

Many years ago UPS was a real pain in the ass about exact addresses, and alternate delivery addresses, but these days they leave packages next door and leave a tag on our door to let us know, Ivan, the driver at our location also makes certain that his sub on his days off knows about the alternate delivery locations for the whole block, he gets well taken care of at Christmas too.

Our UPS delivery man is great and always brings cookies for our mascot Harrison every day.... Our last UPS delivery guy was also great and was known as the "Singing UPS Driver". He had an awseom voice and he gained some national fame when CBS did a news cut on him. He retired last November.

I used to live in Toledo. They are known as the glass capital of the world. Companies like Libbey are based there. Libbey They make glassware for food service. So it makes sense that Kneisley would get into the glass business also.

I am going to have to stop by Kneisley when I am up there on St. Pat's Day. I didn't know they were in Toledo until after I moved. I called them once and I got Betty. I remember that she seemed kind of grouchy.

BTW: If any of you need to make a stop at Kneisley again, you HAVE to go to Tony Packo's! [thumbsup] They are world famous for their hot dogs, pickles (sweet hots are my favorite) and hungarian food. They have thousands of hot dog buns on their walls signed by celebrities. Jamie Farr used to refer to them on MASH when he played Klinger. Story Here You need to go to the one on Front street though and not one of their other locations. Front street (pictured on the homepage and below) has a much better atmosphere and on saturday nights they have a jass band. (yes that's jass not jazz) Tony Packo's

Kneisley makes inspection/quality control machines for the auto glass industry. 450 & 500 watt xenon. They may also make other items.

In the past they made heated feeders for chickens, etc. but I think they stopped this years ago.

BTW: Stong built a new plant in 1948. Kneisley moved into the "before 1948' old Strong plant. Louis

They were makin a run of the chicken heaters last time I was there. A relative of ours near Hudsonville, MI has one of the largest chicken farms in the Midwest and uses(or did use) their heaters.

Betty denied to me that it was the "old" Strong building one time but I showed her an old Strong ad in IP magazing that had their address at the old Strong plant. They make their own transformers on the premises and they are dipped in varnish and oven baked inside a garage in the back alley.... The basement there is also interesting as it contains many of the prototypes of the stuff that Kneisley made.

All it'll take is a good Strong wind to knock over that old place.....
