Installing 6 channel amps in any cimema is a very stupid thing! Yes, a customer of ours has a bunch of these and they fail about as often as the phone rings in Brads office. Weighing close to a hundred pounds boxed they are VERY expensive to ship back and forth for repair and an inconvenience to the customer....although we did warn them NOT to buy these amps [Big Grin] .
Anyway 2 more of these amps laid a bad egg today and BOTH of them had just come back from repair... one from Smart and the other from AB Internationsl, the company that made these units for Smart.

The SYMPTOM is that the protect lights will come on for one of the 2 channel amp boards, however the amp is completely dead on all channels and there is some hum in all speakers.

The fix is very simple and the problem is nothing more than an open main rail cap(Cornell Dubilier DCME1235) in the power supply supplying power to the board who's protect lights are on. I reccomend replacing all 6 caps in an amp when this happens as the repaied amps that failed expereinced other main cap failures. Clearly, either Smart, or AB International SHOULD have replaced all 6 caps as they obviously got stuck with a bad batch of them. The funny thing is that none of these amps have experienced any blown channels... The failure problem is actually pretty lame and had they been repaired correctly Smart could have saved face with this long time customer of theirs, but now its another they've permanently lost.

They must be pretty reliable then, because most people have learned to email rather than call. They get ahold of me faster! [Razz]
