Karlsruhe, Germany - "50 YEARS OF TODD-AO" Festival
posted by Preston on September 23, 2005 at 8:12am

KARLSRUHE, GERMANY — During October 7th - 9th a festival called “50 YEARS OF TODD - AO” will be held at the SCHAUBURG Cinerama cinema in Karlsruhe, Germany.
New 70mm prints of HELLO DOLLY, THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES, PATTON, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY and vintage 70mm prints of RYANS DAUGHTER, MY FAIR LADY and AIRPORT will be shown during the festival.

The SCHAUBURG Cinerama goes back to 1906 and still has the curved screen and the ambiente from the 1960’s, when it was reconstructed to a single lens Cinerama theatre.

All films are shown in the Original English versions, except the vintage prints, which were German dubbed language versions.

Thomas Hauerslev's website has more information:

http://www.in70mm.com/

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2005/schauburg/karlsruhe.htm

quote:
A 50th anniversary is celebrated in gigantic proportions in October. 50 years ago Todd-AO introduced the 70mm format with its large and sharp images, almost three dimensional, and sound with five channels behind the screen and surround effects in the cinema.

During a full weekend, ten gigantic epics are shown in the impressive Todd-AO 70mm format on a huge 136 sqm curved screen in the famous classic cinema. The Schauburg Cinerama is one of the few surviving cinemas, with 70mm projectors, a red curtain and the huge curved screen. It’s the perfect framework for the presentation of these brand new 70mm prints with DTS digital sound. There will also be small exhibitions, functions and line of 70mm short subjects and a lecture.

Bevan’ floyd’ and John’

The In-70mm site is indispensable for information, and research, so 50 years WOW, I have a few of these classics on DVD, and I’m just a little bit jealous, because I’ve for one have never seen “2001: A Space Odyssey” in (Cinerama) but sure can imagine what that must feels like.

Anyway If there’s a good read on it on the In-70mm, for which I saved the pages or links that you posted, and I‘ll have read though it later on, I’ve read another article about (Todd-Ao) which was very, very interesting, practically the part where they talk about the dubbing stage where classics like “The Sound of Music”, “E.T.” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” where mixed at anyway I hope the festival all goes well…

Maybe I’ll do a Todd-Ao week with the DVD’s like “The Sound of Music” “South Pacific” “My Fair Lady” “2001: A Space Odyssey” with the THX and JBL and make it spectacular, only they have the real edge and size to truly draw you into the picture…

Happy 50 years “Todd-Ao.” [beer]

Monte,

Only OKLAHOMA, AROUND THE WORLD and one of the shorts were done in 30 fps.

With 30fps, they had to shoot separate versions of 35 and 70. It was much easier to make a 35mm version from the 65mm / 24fps negative.

"Symbiosis" is 65mm/30 fps Super Panavision 70 and many more special venue titles.

The "Cinespace 70" Todd-AO demo is in 65mm/30 fps

The abandoned "ClearVision 2000" 65mm format was 30 fps

One of the highlights of the 2006 weekend is a tribute to cinematographer Robert Gaffney - to celebrate his 75th birthday. We will show three short films of his (all in 70mm): "Motion", "Sky over Holland" and "Fortress of Peace".

Have they ever been shown in the US?
