I have an RCA 1050 soundhead but it has the 1040 motor cradle, and I have the motor with fly wheel used on an RCA 1050. I want to remove the fly wheel and put it at the inching knob end of the motor so I can fit it on the 1040 cradle. How do I remove the fly wheel?????

If you can, just replace the whole motor and the flywheel. I can't be sure - it has been so long - that there is a shaft length issue involved.

Not only is the shaft length an issue as Paul Thompson suggested, but the flywheel mount, if it's anything like an RCA 9030, is also going to be a problem. The flywheel is pressed into position on a tapered section of the motor shaft and held in place by (IIRC) a left-hand-threaded nut. The inching knob, on the other hand, is secured by a setscrew.

Click here to read a thread from about eight months ago with some insight on pulling flywheels from RCA soundhead motors. At least you can find out how it's done if you need to do some work on that 1050 motor for some other reason. [thumbsup]

Your situation seems strange, maybe you are trying to upgrade theMI 1040 to a 50 and have the motor and the flywheel from a 1050 but only the cradle for a MI1040. When I was young, and still had a twinkle in my eye, I had socked a lot of MI1050- MI 9030-50 flywheels off the shaft using various methods. As Jon Miller says correctly, the flywheel is on a taper and will always come off if you read him correctly. It`s a lh thread and loosen the nut a few turns, but not all the way off, and sock the flywheel with a dead blow hammer around it`s perimeter and with sweet oil and perserverance it will come off. How you are going to install a flywheel with a bored taper on the front end;I don`t have the slishtest.

The previous thread about 9030 motor flywheel removal can be found by searching for "Robbins & Myers Motor Question".

I found out the hard way many years ago that hitting things to get them apart should only be used as a last resort. Gear pullers can be had at a reasonable price.

If your swapping motors on RCA sound heads be aware that the correct motor speed for 60 Hz is 1765 RPM, not 1725 RPM that's commonly available today
