Just curious if anyone has had Smart mod 7 change format to non-sync during the middle of the film, Its erratic it can happen when ever, my temp soln. to this problem is to maintain a contact to keep it in SR. Also do you know if a DTS 6D has a maintained contact NO & NC on that 50 pin plug?
Thanks

Hi Marc,

The most usual cause of reverting to non-sync in SMART processors is some type of power glitch. The circuit that causes the processor to wake up in non-sync tends to be a little sensitive to power disturbances. If, for example the line voltage drops rather severely and then comes back up to normal, the processor might think it is a power up situation and go to non-sync. This can happen if some high-power device (like an air conditioner compressor, for example) comes on, causing a large momentary drop in the line voltage.

It might be caused by some external device (like the automation or digital player) pulling the music format terminal low momentarily. This could be checked by temporarily disconnecting the automation and/or the digital player. If it operates OK for a while, then you have eliminated the MOD 7 as the problem.

The MOD 7 itself or its power supply may be at fault. If you have another MOD 7, you may want to swap power supplies to check that possibility. You could also swap the MOD 7 processor to see if the problem follows the processor or stays in the same rack. Just be aware that swapping processors means that all levels will be incorrect. This is OK for a quick test without an audience. Just be sure to put the processors back in the correct system when done testing.

Also, are you having static discharge problems in the booth? This time of year with the cooler dryer weather sometimes causes static problems. Do you know if the problem occurs when someone touches the sound rack and has a static discharge?

I would also want to make sure that the sound rack is properly grounded. Poor grounds can cause all manner of strange problems.

Please call SMART at 1-800-457-6278 and ask for the Service Department if you need further assistance.
