Films in CDS (crappy dropout silence)

1990
Days of Thunder
Dick Tracy
Edward Scissorhands
Flatliners

1991
Doors, The
Final Approach
For the Boys
Hudson Hawk
Terminator 2

1992
Universal Soldier

------------

Anyone know what screen(s) CDS was installed in for UA Horton Plaza 7 (now a 14) & Pacific Grossmont Trolley 8?

BTW, I can't stand the AMC Century City 14. I can't believe that so many people (in hollywood!) would want to wacth a movie in such small thatres with tiny screens, awfull sound, and projectionists who cant seem to focus for ****. AMC should bulldoze that sucker and rebuild a nice theatre in its place.

At least one theatre in the UK was equipped with CDS . Not at work so can't be certain but West Thurrock seems to lurk in the back of my mind and I think that they had a CDS print of T2 for several years.

CDS actually stands for "Cinema Digital Sound". Unfortunately, I have never heard it in action. It was never installed in Germany, alhough there were some demos in Munich. I hear it sounded really good.
It was ultimately unsuccessful - but it was, if not the first digital sound ever reproduced in a movie theatre, the first attempt to introduce a digital system for everyday purposes, and as such a memorable effort which should command a little more respect.

I believe that both the UCI and the Warner site in Thurrok had CDS installed - trials were done at the old Odeon Marble Arch however I am unsure if anything screened there.

I think that Terminator 2, Dick Tracey and The Doors were the only films shown in it

At least one processor remains - with a Penthouse inspired by the JJ Mag unit ?

Ok, so HOW does (did) CDS work?

Was it like SR-D/SDDS printed on the film or like DTS on a seperate device?

Was it 'stereo', 4 track, EX etc ??

I had never heard of it before.

Bill.

Perer (Hall),

A CDS reader was on display in the Projected Picture Trust section at Bletchley Park a rew years ago, but I haven't seen it recently.

The PPT have an old Gaumont (eclipse?) projector from the late '20s, with both turntable and optical sond head. For a display at Grip House Studios Dion Hanson added to it a RCA mag penthouse, DTS code reader and three digital heads, CDS, Dolby and SDDS, and then bolted the top spool box back on top! I took a picture of it, but I can't find it now.

ps. I was at the David Lean last night; I hate that acop. Luckily I had about half an hour before the first show to master the art of starting a machine without the **** thing tripping.
