Hello All,

I have a question that perhaps somebody may have the anwser for. I have a Potts 35MM Alpha Platter (3 tier) and it appears that the transformer in the variac has a few bad spots where the power dies. Is this a part that I can source locally or do I need a genuine Potts part??

Thanks
Jeff

I think you can get them from Grainger.

While we are on the subject: how many different types of brains and motors have there been for the Alpha Platter System?

Jeff:

The variac is a Staco # 1010B and can be ordered from www.mouser.com under Mouser's part number of 5874-1010B ($143.51)

Are you sure the brushes are ok on the variac. If it something to do with those, its a cheap fix

Jeff,
Have you pulled the transformer and looked at the brush that makes contact? This would be the first thing to check before spending money on a new transformer. Also, in case you didn't know the makeup table uses the same transformer in case you ever need one for an emergency.

I beleive that the part number for this is;
2103 Contact Assembly Variac (Staco 1010).
2103 is the Strong number for this item.

The typical symptom of this part going bad is that the elevator on the platter tends to "hunt" at certain times during the presentation.

Repair is relatively straight-forward, requiring a soldering iron, solder, a slot screwdriver and a set of circlip pliers.

Be sure to replace the washers in the order that they came off (usually a copper one, a black one and a red one).

Be aware also, that if stuck, you may find this part locally at electrical or electronic distributors who sell Staco - variac components.

Can/do these platters run 70mm?

Some other threads were saying yes and no.

70mm is no problem with the correct rollers.\\BTW: won't work on 5 deck platters. Louis

OK! Great! Thanks for the info. So, how come the 3 decks can run it, but the 5 decks can't?

Is the only thing that needs changing the rollers/payouts, or do you need to time it too?

5 deck units - don't have the clearance for that big of film to pay out decently enough to the rollers on the tower in as well with the rollers on the brain-as you can see here on this Christie setup..The brain's rollers stands up pretty tall using 70mm payouts.
