I always wondered...

I can readily understand the dangers of under-filling, but why is it "just as bad" to overfill a Century intermittent with oil?

The only thing I found was that it makes a mess when it leaks out or gets thrown out all over everything including the film.

I agree with Paul that you will probably have a mess from oil leaking out.

I have also had Century C movements seal the air vent and pump the oil out. Too much oil may do that. If that happens you are low on oil again. The Spacer for the cam end play bearing had a large bottom diameter and it partially blocked the hole leading to the air vent. Everytime I rebuilt one I ground off part of that piece. SA movements solved the problem with a smaller diameter.

E-7 movements were designed to eject overfilled oil and stop at the proper level.
