We are building up The Fast Runner which is 9 reels long. It is a brand new print fresh from the lab.

All of reel 8 and all of reel 9 are red.

Is this an artistic choice or is this a mistake? We are trying to call the film company now but it is past their bedtime in NYC.

Ian,

I ran that film a couple months ago, and I know it was a print that the head of Lot 47 saw, and the look of the film is consistent throughout. In other words, reels 8 and 9 need replacing. Good luck!

I have done some checking around and you definately have two bad reels. This film was shot on digital betacam NTSC, then transferred to film. Get those suckers replaced.

Funny thing is, Roger Ebert, the champion of film, says that this film is a cinematic masterpiece. Who want's to be the one to tell him that it's a digital film?

Dave

It's a mistake. Did your print come from Magno Lab-Link or some other lab? R9 is very short, but otherwise the print is (should be) consistent throughout.

Most labs put a few frames of a control patch (Kodak LAD Girl, gray patches) in the leader to help control their printers and processing machines. If these are biased in a red direction, it indicates a lab problem. If they are the same as the good reels, and the pictures are biased red, then it may be that's the way the director/cinematographer wanted the reels color timed/graded:

From the others' comments, sounds like you should request replacement reels.

There was a problem in printing the film. We are getting another print that came off screen last night. The replacement is supposed to be here by 8:00 PM Friday.
