SMPTE has a proposed new Recommended Practice on its website for "Trial Publication" and comment. Proposed SMPTE Recommended Practice RP 216 - Specifications for 3-Perforation Test and Alignment Film for 35-mm Motion Pictures, specifies a test film for setting up lab equipment and telecines for 35mm 3-perforation formats:

This document is a good example of the technical information contained in SMPTE standards, recommended practices and engineering guidelines, available from SMPTE:

John,
I've worked with alot of 3 perf stuff that has been shot for TV inpast years. The standard is a great idea but I ahve one question.
About 10 years ago I was trying to look up some SMPTE reccommended practices and could find no place to get them. A call to SMPTE even left me at a dead end street. Its nice that there are practices set up and followed by the industry but if even SMPTE can't tell me where to look em up why bother with them at all......? Shouldn't these all be internet accessible in this day and age?

SMPTE Standards, Recommended Practices, and Engineering Guidelines can be purchased from the SMPTE:
http://smpte.org/smpte_store/standards/

The CD-ROM containing ALL of the current motion-picture standards is a very good deal, at only $250 for a copy (license) that can be shared by up to five users:
http://smpte.org/smpte_store/standards/cd_standards.cfm

These SMPTE documents are COPYRIGHTED, and the sales help finance the work of SMPTE in developing and maintaining standards.

Eventually, SMPTE may provide on-line access for a fee. (They already provide an on-line library service for an annual fee.)

One way to get free copies of standards is to participate on an SMPTE engineering committee. Members have access to copies of standards that are up for review within their committee, which is done on a five-year cycle. But your participation and travel to meetings is at your expense. Proposed new standards are also published on-line and in the SMPTE Journal for review, and provide a way of getting an "unofficial" copy for SMPTE members.

In other words...being on the committee entitles you to the last version of the document (not the revised one) for the committee(s) you happen to be a member. Thus if the committee approves RP-XXX and it gets updated and published as RP-XXX 2002, you don't get THAT copy.

But, for the most part, havnig the old copy is fine plus, if you participate, you know what changes, if any are being made. It is also a good way to broaden one's knowlege of the various aspects.

P-3 is the projection technology committee
A-12 is sound committee

Both pertain to cinemas

There is also the new DC-28 (Digital Cinema) so you can get in on the ground floor of this emerging technology.

Here is a link to information about participating on a SMPTE Technical Committee:
http://www.smpte.org/engineering_committees/

Here is a list of all the committees:
http://www.smpte.org/engineering_committees/technology_committees/

And here is the "Statement of Participation" that outlines your responsibilities as a member of a SMPTE Engineering Committee:

Film-Tech regulars who are members of the Projection Technology Committee (P3) include Steve Guttag, Pat Moore, Frank Angel, Gordon McLeod, Larry Shaw and myself.
