When I opened the gate to thread one of the projectors tonight, there was a whole bunch of greenish dust on the inboard side of the gate and film trap. I ran the next show with a media cleaner (sorry, we don't have FG yet) and loosened the tension as much as possible, but the shedding still happened. The projector is a PK60D, and I even reversed the white runners in the film trap, but no luck. What could cause this, and why would it only be on one side?

We had a similar mystery discovered this morning.

Plenty black & green almost sponge-like dust was found in the gate of one of our projectors. At first I suggested belt-shedding, but there is no belt close to the gate. Strange...

What movies? Brand new prints, or previously projected? What is the relative humidity in the projection room?

Sometimes, freshly processed prints can leave gelatin emulsion skivings the first few passes through a projector. During processing, the emulsion swells, and sometimes doesn't shrink back to its original size after drying, leaving a "proud" edge that gets scuffed off by the edgeguides and sprocket teeth. Usually these skivings come from the top layers, so they are magenta in color. High humidity can aggravate the situation.

It would be a very unusual coincidence to find prints in Florida and in South Africa having the same problem on the same day, as different labs would likely be involved.

Ken: have you tried running another print through the same projector? If you have and there's no green gunge then it's a dodgy print as described by John. If you have and there is green gunge... well, it could be that you have two NFG prints but I'd be inclined to take another look at the projector's gate components.

Well, it's not my decision to swap houses, but I'll ask the manager tonight. The print is new, it's Mr. Deeds. The funny thing is, I don't remember it happening last week. I can't remember if it was in the same house last week, but I don't remember any shedding problems with this projector or with Mr. Deeds. Does it sometimes take a while before this shedding starts to happen?

We've had problems with our "Mr. Deeds" prints, too. They have all shed a little bit, but one in particular has left quite a bit of emulsion in the trap. One of our kidshow prints was run through for a festival, and no shedding was present, so I assume it was the Mr. Deeds print. A few passes through a cleaner and FG did wonders.
