Here's one to get you digging in to the musty filing cabinets.

Does anyone have any technical information on the ARC120 process used in the early 1960's to produce a Cinerama like image on a deep curved screen.

I have a copy of the Ideal Kinema article reprinted by Thomas Hauerslev in the 70mm Newsletter but would appreciate any further help.

In particular any photos /information of the Zeiss Ikon prism attachment that enabled the two images printed foot to foot on a single 35mm print to be projected side by side producing the 2.5:1 image would be much appreciated.

And finally I don't suppose anyone has one of these or has used one(Gord?)

Gord,
contact Pacific Theatres as there was a Quintaphonic processor in the lower booth at the Chineese Theatre in Hollywood. Perhaps they didn't throw it out.

Ah, Wonderama/ARC-120. There is a drawing of the device and explanation of the system in Wysotzky's "Widescreen Cinema and Stereophonic Sound." It had a couple sets of prisms directing the two images downward then forward to emerge through two small lenses resembling binoculars. If you can't find a copy locally and no one else comes up with the drawing I know a few libraries with the book and can dig it up for you. You realize of course that it does not split a convential frame but rather a special format with the frames split in half and the images running sideways.

Steve

Someone in the organisation has "borrowed " my well thumbed copy of Wysotzky's book . When I find the culprit I will show them a new use for a Kalee Variamorph!

The reason I am searching around is someone with an ARC120 print has contacted the museum enquiring if we could screen it for him. Now that would be a highlight for a future Widescreen Weekend!

This idea is similar to the Smith-Carney proposal:

Actually Dick a better punishment is to have the offender carry a GK21 base up the booth stairs a couple of times

Ronald Grant’s Cinema Museum (private) might be worth a try; he usually has everything and anything!

The London telephone number is 020 7840 2200.

Ronald Grant has been acknowledged on many cinema and film related television programmes.
