I was wondering where the first frame of film should be in regards to placement along the platter/projector threading process so that the sound gets flipped over from nonsync to film and the lights have dimmed at the exact moment the first frame of film gets through the film gate.

or does everbody use cue marks to mark X amount of feet before the first frame of film before automation kicks the lights off and muzak off.

This will depend upon the type of projector you have and how fast or slow your projector motor kicks in. Obviously, the slower the starter, the more leader you will need.

You will have to experiment and observe the length of the leader that will work best, then thread accordingly.

Also, the delay time on your automation from start-up to time of switchover to sync sound will factor in. Once you have found the perfect length, note just where on your system you want the splice from the leader to the film to be.

Since you have showmanII automation the normal point isPicture Start in the gate.
This is based on the original timeing cam locations but since yours are used the timers may have been resett by someone differently
