I remember talking about this many months ago, but I can't seem to find the thread.

Anyway, I'm looking to "replace and rewire" my Christie AW-1 platter's vertical column. I seem to have a "short" somewhere within the column and it kicks the breaker everytime I try to use the top platter.

I know I'm going to want to replace the "Jones Plugs", and I know that Mouser sells them. Question is... which plugs and sockets do I need to get?

Has anybody done this before?

Are you sure it is a "Jones" plug on that AW-1? By the AW-2 Christie was using the Jones plug but I could have sworn that the AW-1 used an octal plug (or at least on the ones I ran about 20 years ago).

The plugs and sockets on my AW-1 are made of a round bake-lite material (I think they're brown in color)

Somebody once said they were "polarized" so the plugs would only fit one way into the column, but mine seem to fit any way you turn them.

Since I don't exactly know what an "octal" plug is, I can't be sure.

An "Octal" plug has EIGHT pins arranged in a circle, and a center locating hub with an index key (so they only fit one way). It was widely used for vacuum tubes in the 40's and 50's, like the 5U4, 6L6, and 6V6. It was often used for cable connectors too.

Good lord! Its a good thing that Christie didn't base the platter drives on vacuum tubes! Mouser should also stock the 8 pin octal plugs that are used on them. They are actually high quality, and if you are darn good with a soldering iron you can heat up the pins and remove the wore and solder and re-use the ones that are there. That is.... unless they are broken.

Cinch-Jones makes several connector, but this is the "classic" type:

I'm not sure what type is used on the AW-1, but this is the type used on the AW-3 for the makeup table.

If this is what you are looking for, Digikey sells them.
