I attempted the task of replacing the lower magazine belts on one of my Brenkert BX-60/RCA 9030 projectors this weekend.

I've looked through the manuals and determined what size I "thought" I needed.
I ordered two 42" x 3/8" belts from Grainger, and installed them last night, just to find out they are the wrong length.

On another note, the original belts had almost a "round" cross-section and were made out of some type of fiberous material (almost looked like leather). The original belts were not continuous, but rather were joined together with a small "C-shaped" steel ring. (I found that all 4 of my machines have this type of old belt)

Once I figured out what size belts I need, is there anything wrong with using a V-shaped rubber-corded belt as opposed to this leather looking thing that was originally on them?

Barry, You need to get either round leather belting or "O" Thane from Wolk in Chicago. The correct diameter should be 5/16". Be sure to get a couple of joiner bulletts with the belting. Give Wolk a call for this. If you have a big industrial supply place near you they may also have some. I prefer the leather belting as it seems to give less trouble over the long haul.

I have used sewing machine belts on our BK60 with great results. They are available at any sewing machine repair shop. They are round, have the "c" ring, and come in various lengths. I take the old belt in for measurement.

There is a product available from houses that specialize in commercial belting--conveyers, flat belting etc. It is called Roundthane. It's available in many diameters and is resistant to oil. The ends are joined by double ended barbed fittings inserted into the ends. I use 5/16 inch on The take-ups on our XL's. It is slightly stretchy and cost about a dollar foot. It usually last 4 to 6 years. It out lasts the leather about 5000 to 1, if you could still get leather.
