Although it can certainly be done, running optical playback off of a VistaVision print would bring in a whole new EQ need for the "A" chain, and you may possibly need a new slit lens to conform the eq("hinge") point to this higher linear film speed. The best way to do it would be to dub the track over on a re-recording stage to mag and really be able to listen to it critically and make the eq adjustments. You could also clean it up allot and get rid of some of the noise. If it is a Perspecta print then a Perspecta decoder could figure into this and you could make a really good sounding 3 channel mag(or DTS for that matter) and playback from that. Another option would be to use a SMPTE time code based DA-88 type digital recorder to dub over to and play back from.

The problem is archival playback of some existing prints. Also to do a transfer the sync pull up is still needed to be established to either prepare a timecode lock to a shaftencoder or the start mark on a mag

Gordon:

The original article by Century's Larry Davee had some photos and information about running optical sound, including the frequency response characteristics:
http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/vvproj.htm

You supplied it to Marty Hart's American Widescreen Museum, so you have the original copy.

Perhaps you could determine exactly how much the sound read point is ahead of the picture gate by finding a loud sound on the print soundtrack and finding the corresponding picture frame. Does the leader have a sync "pop" (beep)?
