This is for Karen but feel free to answer.

Why does DTS send out new disks almost every week?

Are there that many new trailers from week to week that can justify the expense of pressing, jewel boxes, printing, shipping, etc.

Paul.

My guess would be that the production schedule for trailers is often just as tight, if not tighter, than feature films. In other words, the "final cut" is often not available until just a few days before it opens in theatres.

So, assuming many trailers don't have a final cut until a week or two before they need to be played, the DTS trailer disks need to be issued on a frequent enough basis to have the soundtracks for all current trailers. One disk a month wouldn't cut it for trailers that were approved just a week or two prior to the play date.

You could always send them here. I have never had a dts trailer disc and to my knowledge, none have ever been sent to Australia.

...but I sure could use them!

I've only seen one theatre which actually got these things every two weeks like clockwork. They didn't have DTS, never had DTS, and would probably never be able to afford DTS. It was pretty funny at the time...

New trailers come out every week or so and we only send discs if new trailers are on it. Every once in a while you'll see a new trailer disc one week after the last and it's only done if a studio feels the trailer is important enough to justify paying a premium to get it out to theaters in a hurry.

If anyone is getting trailer discs and would like to be removed from the list, please drop me an email.

Just thought i'd ask.

Okay, I'm going W-a-a-a-a-y out on a limb, here!

Since we know that the files, once encoded, can be copied as easily as any other; why can't we just get them via e-mail or off an ftp:// site? Then we could just burn our own CDs and have up-to-date disks no matter WHERE you are?

I'm not saying to do this with features, just with trailers.

The discs from DTS also have certain .exe files on them that update the onboard software in the player on the fly.
I don't know if CD-R's would play without these system files. Kinda like encoded DVD files not playing from your hard drive (unless, of course, you used a ripper to decode it, not that I've ever done that.)

I was thinking more along the lines of a disk image. SMI's compress rather nicely. With that and a DSL line I don't see why downloading a whole CD's worth couldn't be done in a "reasonable" length of time.

Using a SMI, a 640 Meg disk could easily be brought down to 150 Meg. That's within the reach of most DSL lines, isn't it? Besides, the sheer overhead involved would keep unauthorized people from getting the files. -- For now, until T-3's get cheap enough for people to have one in their house!

Ok, we got discs on the 8th, the 15th, the 22nd, the 29th, and just this week.

Guess what happened to all those disc's? Well, the 8th's got put in, and the 15th, 22nd, and 29th got placed in the circular file.

I always put the newest trailer discs in the drives. Sometimes I will keep the older ones in if it turns out a trailer is on the old disc but not on the new one- this happens occasionally (I always take off trailers for movies that are already out if they say "Coming Soon" or something similar.) I can never bring myself to throw anything out, I've kept at least one of every disc on hand. I've been meaning to put together a reel of every preview contained on one disc so I can use that for testing the DTS systems.

Why don't we just put the rils on a site and let you burn your own discs? I doubt that would be an effecient way to get trailers to theaters in DTS. Besides no one having the time to do it, no one will want to buy blank discs.

Unfortunately, trailer discs are only available for theaters in North America.

Karen -

That's just it: Available in selected teritories only..... Hmmm

I don't know, whether it is an installment failure in my house, but my CP65 will not accept DTS and Dolby Digital in the same show. (-Of course it will, but then i will have to be in the booth to stop the projector, and manually shut down the Dolby Digital, before main feature start with REAL sound.)

Result: On DTS shows, trailers in analog only - and thats bad !!!!

Best regards

Per
