According to www.upcomingmovies.com Disney is releasing Atlantis this summer in BOTH 35mm and 70mm. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a trend.

Hmmmm, but will they release it in 70mm? The info on the web site only says "produce".

What would be the point of producing 70mm, if not releasing it? But, of course, stranger things have happened...

Any chance it will be 70mm IMAX prints, and not normal 5-perf 70mm? Recall the success of "Fantasia 2000" in IMAX theatres.

Nothing about this to date on the IMAX web site, either under "coming soon" or the "in the works" sections.

Sounds great! They had the 70mm version of "Black Cauldron" at the Sameric (Boyd) Theatre in Phildelphia, and it looked incredible. Nothing like 70mm in a movie palace!

Since they're talking 70mm, wouldn't it be great if they'd release Sleeping Beauty in 70mm again? That would look fantastic on the El Capitan's screen!

I posted something about this several months ago. At that time the 70mm release was only rumor among Disney fans. Seems they are once again on target. But that brings up another question. Does anyone have a guess as to how many U.S. theaters are still equipped with working 70mm machines?

I wasn't told the details, but some Imax theatres that prepare bookings months in advance were told by Disney "don't make plans for" (fill in mystery dates) because they have plans that they won't disclose yet.

The plot thickens . . .

For a goood list of 70MM theatres, try Scott Norwood's site: http://www.redballoon.net/
I do know that 3 of the 5 listed Rochester, NY 70MM theatres have closed this past year.

Thanks, Mark.

Here are the direct links:

US theatres

non-us theatres

Please send additions/updates/corrections my way and I will add them to the lists. (which, btw, are totally unofficial and probably have many errors...many theatres have probably closed since I started these lists in 1997, too)

THe Fountain Square 14 in Nashville is on the list and it has been closed for at least a couple of years.

It's a shame that there are no 70mm-capable theatres in AL or TN (except IMAX).

Scott-
What a great list, a true labor of love, I'm sure.

Anyway, the corrections for NYC would show the following theaters closed: The National Twin, the Guild 50th, The Bay, The Rivoli, The 34th Street East, the Criterion Center and (and this one really hurts) the Regency, which at one time was one of the greatest, if not the greatest revival houses in the country. They tore it down and built (are you ready now?) a Victoria's Secret in it's place. Also, the 57th Street Playhouse is now run by the DGA for their exclusive use and is simply called the DGA Theater. And, the Paris is now indepentently owned.

I've made the updates. Please keep the corrections/additions/etc. coming. I want to make this list as accurate and current as time allows.

Also, apologies for the typos. The list started as a simple web form thing that people could fill out as they pleased. This worked fine when there were only a few dozen theatres on it, but it became unmanageable and needed to be organized by state and city. For now, I'm doing the updates manually, though I'll eventually add a form interface for additions.
