Just a quick question:

Does it matter if a xenon bulb is stored in a vertical or horizontal position for long periods of time inside a locked cabinet? In other words, can devitrification occur faster if the bulb is in one stored position over another position?

Thanks for your input,
Aaron

It is wise to store larger lamps vertically with the postivie end down but I don't have the stats...

If you get Christie xenon lamps they will have an arrow as to which end is up for storage.

Storing them vertically is what we do, too. The reason (I heard) is the heavy tungsten piece inside might bend down over time.

What is (de)vitrification with a xenon bulb? My dictionary says: "vitrify: to change into glass or into a glassy substance by heat and fusion."

Xenon bulbs are installed into lamphouses either horizontally or with the large electrode up and it doesn't hurt them.

If you look on the Christie box, it says that the arrow goes up for shipping.

If you go by the arrows on the outside of the box, that means you can't take the bulb out and inspect it when you receive it.

I doubt that "electrode sag" is much of an issue with storage of cold xenon lamps. Horizontal lamps are rotated to even out any blackening of the bulb, and to overcome the slight "sag" over time of the hot electrodes. The arrows on lamp cases probably indicate the optimum direction to minimize the risk of lamp breakage during shipping, if the case is accidently dropped. I prefer storing individual cased lamps on their side, only because if stored vertically, the cases could more easily tip over and fall out of the cabinet.
