OK, so we've got scope and flat. Our scope is the correct ratio, however, our flat lens is too small so we crop top and bottom a tad.

Question:
Given the choice, would you go 5mm larger on the flat lens to bring the ratios into line thus having a slightly smaller flat picture, or would you lift the masking up a bit (we can, there's screen behind it) and set it to the larger lens size for flat and go 5mm smaller on scope even if it then meant you'd be cropping a little on the sides. (We can't move sides out any further).

Your opinions please...

I'd keep scope as it is, and show the full 2.39:1 aspect ratio "wall-to-wall". Ideally match the image height for both 2.39:1 and 1.85:1 (fixed top and bottom masking, adjustable side masking). If you insist on having a higher 1.85:1 image, err on the side of a longer lens and less magnification. In any case, show the full aspect ratio, and don't crop the image. Use the SMPTE 35-PA (RP40) test film to verify projected image area.

I'd think I would (also) leave 'scope alone, and get a longer focal length lens for flat. If I understand the your setup, that would mean that both formats are as large as they can be with no cropping.

When I set up screen sizes and lenses, I usually try to favor flat if a choice must be made. It's the format that has to work the "hardest."

I would seriuosly consider getting a Schneider Variable Prime lens for this application, especially if you fall inbetween two focal lengths. They are really excellent quality and will allow you to set the exact focal length you need. I wonder if you are cropping your scope picture too? Have you looked at RP-40 to see where things are at?
You can also download the Schneider lens calculator from the Schneider web site in the links section of this site. They just released a new version a few days ago. It may help you out alot.

Mark does the new Schnieder program account for the Variable Prime lens?

Mission accomplished. I put in the larger lens and filed the flat plate to the correct ratio, so now all our screens are screening the correct ratios. (this was the only one which didn't and it was becoming annoying)

Thanks for your inputs.

John
