Hello everybody,

I can buy a DP70 in good condition but the mag soundhead assembly has been replaced with a DTS reader but all the other parts should be still there including the 70mm gate and parts.
The cinema closed down last month and the DP70 is in clean, working condition.
Since I don't know if the mag assembly is an easy part to find, what do you think the projector is worth ?

Check out Thomas Hauerslev's DP70 site at:
http://hjem.get2net.dk/in70mm/DP70/Main.htm

About ten years ago, I purchased a pair of AA-II Norelcos for $13,000 USD including all spare parts, lenses, 70mm rewinds, reels, etc. from the closed Riviera theatre in Rochester. They are now installed in Kodak's 2000-seat "Theater on the Ridge" in Rochester.

I can put you in touch with a guy in Chicago that probably has a mag penthouse you can buy. E-mail me for his name/number.
Don't pay more than around 2000.00 U.S. for the machine. Thats about the going price for used as-is,clean machines here in the states. Refurbished or rebuilt go for more and start at about 3500.00 U.S.

I have a DP70 and have a second for parts. I think I have a spare mag head or at least most of the parts. You can get DP70s for anywhere from nothing to many many thousands of dollars depending (like everything else) on condition. If it has a DTS unit where the mag head was that will drive the price up. It's interesting that it has it there as I machined a few mounting brackets for putting the DTS unit there. I'd love to see a picture. Contact me off line. We DP70 owners need to stick together. The only bad thing about that projector (besides the nonavailability of parts and the price when you can find them) is when you move them. Do yourself a favor and either borrow, rent or buy an engine hoist (no foolin)

Hello,

Thanks for all the advice.
I spoke today to the old operator of the cinema and he said the mag penthouse should still be in the cinema.
I'm going to check it out on friday and will try to make some pictures.
Will keep everybody posted here.

Greg:

You are correct about using an engine hoist. In years of moving projectors, manpower was always enough, some were heavy, but extra hands got the job done.

When it came time to lift the heads back on to my AA 11s I had to get a hoist to do it safely. These things are ssssssooooooo heavy.

They make a Century head light by comparison and a Kinoton in danger of blowing away!

Hello,
I went to see the machine on friday and made an offer.
Got the news today that I can have the DP70 so it will be a 'heavy' day tomorrow to bring the projector to my home.
In the mean time, I have found a mag penthouse in Germany, so thanks for the info on the spare ones in the USA but it's still a lot cheaper to ship from Germany to Belgium.
I have taken a couple of pictures of the DP70 including the DTS reader will try to get them scanned and send them to Brad for the picture gallery.

congrats on joining the 70mm club make sure you get the new with serial number to Mr Hauerslev
Isn't it a sad comment on this industry that there are probably more home 70mm installations running than in comercial cinemas

Anyone who has experienced "The Splendor of 70 mm" sadly agrees with you.

70 mm deserves to be seen on large screens. 35 mm is a wonderful format, but you can only push so much energy through a frame the size of a small postage stamp. Michael Todd, Brian O'Brien, and other visionaries had the right idea. Where are they now, when they are needed the most?

Speaking of 70mm home presentations, this past weekend some of Sweden's finer projectionists and techs gathered at the home of projection guru and 70mm fanatic Stefan Adler to watch 70mm--in Mr Adler's back yard.

The projector that was used was not a DP70, however, mostly because we had to transport the equipment to and from his home, and live to tell the tale. Instead, we used a Zeiss Favorit70, in other words a license-built Prevost, that performed its duties flawlessly.

I believe that more information about the event will be made available by Mr Adler shortly. Check out his widescreen pages at: http://www1.tripnet.se/~adler/wide2.html
They are well worth reading anyway.

All I can say is, you should have been there.
