Hello, I work at a single screen theatre with a simplex 35/70 XL. I was cleaning the gate and on the left runner there was all this magenta powder. I also noticed it on the soundhead sprockets, outer teeth only.
what the *$&^ is going on? Is it from the soundtrack, and can it be fixed?

Josh

Oh, and before I forget again, 13 posts ago I was a newbie and forgot so say anything.

That's typical polyester film stock shedding. The FilmGuard will put cleaning your projectors to an end, stopping all shedding and static.

Spray some on a rag and wipe the edges of the print. That won't clean, but it will stop the shedding and most of the static.

Josh:

As noted by Brad and Ken, lubricating the film should help reduce abrasion from the projector. But since the dusting is so localized to one side of the print, you should also carefully examine the film path to see if there is any obvious source of abrasion.

Magenta-colored powder is often from the emulsion. Occasionally, a freshly processed print will leave emulsion debris the first few passes through a projector because the gelatin emulsion swelled in processing and has not completely shrunk back in drying, leaving an overhanging "edge" that can be scuffed off.

Kodak's "Film Notes for Reel People" had an article about projector dusting in the Summer 1998 issue:
