I screened Price Of Glory last week in which the print was free of lab splices. But on Reel 6 the SRD was dropping out. We moved it to our best digital reader we had (Cat 700) and watched the error rate. Reels 1-5 were in the 2 to 2.5 range with occasional flicker to 3. As soon as it started Reel 6 The error rate increased to 4.5 to 5.5 throught the entire reel. I know that I'm a rookie projectionist at this (11 months) but I am curious what would cause this high error rate on just one reel. This is not the only time a print has done this. We have had other prints where the second and last reel for example would read 2 to 3 points higher than the rest, of course it would be hitting "F"'s in areas also.

The reason is very simple and has been brought up many times before
A lab does not print a complete film in one pass
All reels 1's are done then reel2 etc
as such one reel can have a printing error and not the rest just as the negative can have a problem for that one reel

Call your booker and tell him R6 has a defective digital track and you need another copy. The more projectionists keep taking that sort of sloppiness, them more laxed the labs get with quality control.

If everyone is having sound problems with a particular reel, there is likely a problem with the sound negative. Whether all the prints of a particular reel are made on a single printer varies with the lab, and the workflow going through the lab.

The labs do care about quality, and will replace reels that are defective. Document any problems by inspecting incoming prints carefully, keeping a log book to record problems, and setting up a program to encourage technically saavy "film buffs" or theatre employees to attend films during the first week and report any problems.
