Anybody play the new release of Yellow Submarine? I called MGM Classics to try to book it and they require that your theatre have DTS in order to play it. I take this to mean that it doesn't have a Dolby Digital track. Well, the Nugget Telluride has Dolby Digital, but not DTS 'cause we're one of the little guys.

So here's my question: Is the optical track Dolby A or SR? Can I lie about playing it in DTS and still get good SR sound out of the print?

And what the hell is the point of doing a stereo track and just printing it in DTS anyway? Is it just to limit the number of theatres they can play it in? Is their goal reduced income or just video/laserdisc/DVD release in stereo? Jucking ferks!

My understanding of the release was really just as a promo for the video release. Is was supposed to be very limited.

I don't recall the analog track's format (A or SR) but it was definately DTS only in the digital department. To my ears, it was a very cool mix too.

MGM has a semi-exclusive deal with DTS so that is probably the reason, not to mention, why pay for extra licensing fees for such a limited release.

FYI, the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Mass. played this film back in September (the new restored print) in one of its first engagements in the US.

Not only does the Brattle not have DTS, they don't even have Dolby! This isn't a problem for most of what they show (classics and art-house titles), but YS would have been much more fun if it had played in a theatre with a decent sound system.

If you do talk to the distributor and mention that it played for two weeks at a theatre with mono sound, I'd be interested to hear the distributor's response...

we played it here in Minneapolis at our single screen "The Heights "(1939)owned by my best friend., they requested you play it in DTS, they don't have DTS at hte heights, so I took my unit out of my home and loaned it them for a week. Thay had fair business. It sounded great, with very discreet surround.

Not about the recent release, but I have recently heard two anecdotes about this film.

One manager told how during the entire run the film about 15 minutes shorter than the announced run time. He chalked it up to bad info from their booking office, but on break down of the print, they discovered that one of the reels never left the shipping cases.

Another manager told of a friend of his that ran a drive-in. To get out earlier, they would drop out 1 and sometimes 2 reels.

In neither case did any customer ever notice, let alone complain.

Jim,

Gary has a DTS player. See if you can borrow his. He also has something else that would help the presentation, a gift from the Rialto.

Has Yellow submarine been fully restored for this release? or is it a reissue from older prints. I have heard that some parts of the film has been digitally cleaned.

Apparently only reel 1 got the digital treatment (might have been a different reel...). The rest was simply reprinted from existing elements.

The new print that I saw _did_ look good. Most likely, the elements were in good enough shape that a full restoration wasn't needed. Let's just hope that the perservation elements are in good shape...

I believe Yel Sub is a fully restored and it also has a song put in that was cut from the original. I was able to see the movie when realeased in our area and I enjoyed it alot!!

As to a theatre running the movie for the entire run with a reel still in the can---
I would think there would be customers every day saying the movie was missing part of it! I know I imeadiatly noticed the new song when it satrted. I know I would have noticed 15 mins missing!!

Take it easy!!

Speaking of missing time... certain British films we used to play always ran somewhat longer than the running time given by the film company. These were films made for/by the BBC.

I strongly suspected these were the actual made-for-TV films, shot at 25 fps. Slightly slow-sounding music was a further tip-off.

Just ran Yellow Submarine for the first time the other night. It's a straight dts only (digital) and no mention of what the optical track is. It just says 'stereo' which normally means 'Dolby A'.

The cinema I ran it in has no digital sound at all and only a CP50 and the print sounded pretty damn good, even for this theatre.
