Does anyone know where I can get any publications relating to theater? Preferably the projection aspect.

Thanks,

Joshua

Not anymore. They used to be all over the place.

The SMPTE has their monthly journal, but it's mostly television and they don't seem to give a hoot about movies, that's why I dropped out in '82. The BKSTS in England does more for film than the Society does. BKSTS has a quarterly publication, just for cinema projection. Both the SMPTE and BKSTS have websites. I don't know how you go about joining either one, you used to have to be recommended by a member, but I think that's changed today.

Kodak had a regular publication called Film Notes for the Reel People. That started around '78 or so. It was pretty good. I started collecting them, but only got a few issues from the theatre I worked at back then. Kodak never seemed to want to put me on their mailing list for some reason, and I gave up after three attempts over the years, so I can't say if they're still coming out with new issues.

The best resource I can think of, though, are the equipment manuals.

Film Journal is another good theatre publication. It has articles covering all areas of the industry, including projection. The latest one has an article explaining Technicolor film process #6, and the new Loews Cineplex in NY. They have a web site at http://www.filmjournal.com

John Pytlak (of Eastman Kodak) is a Film Tech'er here of the forum and he gave us the e-mail where to get on the mailing list. The publication "Film Notes for Reel People" that Tim mentioned above in also on line at www.kodak.com. I think it was the thread marked "Raving on John Pytlak" that had the info.

To be added to the mailing list for "Film Notes for Reel People", FAX your name, job title, and mailing address to Kodak's Cinema Operations Team in Culver City, CA at 310-204-7111. Or send the information via e-mail to pamela.jackson@kodak.com.

Recent issues of "Film Notes for Reel People" are available "on line" at Kodak's web site:
http://www.kodak.com/US/en/motion/newsletters/index.shtml

To date, there have been 52 issues of "Film Notes for Reel People", starting in 1976. I have searched my files for early back issues, and am sending these to Brad Miller to scan and post on Film-Tech. Some of them are quite out of date (issue H-50-1 had a four page discussion on to how to make cement splices), but even the early issues have useful information.

John, I do appreciate you being here among us. I have a copy of H-50.

On page 40, there is an insert about a wonderful lady named Ola McElhinney at Benton Brothers in Atlanta. I knew her back in the early 80's. God, I wish I had her strength! She inspected film all day for 69 years (31 for Benton Bros.) and had lots of time to tell me stories of theater experiences using Nitrate back in the old days.

I dont know if she is still alive, but she was a real live wire in her day. Too bad there arent more out there like Ola.

Bruce, thanks for the kind words about "Film Notes for Reel People" and remembering Ola McElhinney at the Benton Brothers exchange in Atlanta. The issue featuring Ola was H-50-5, published in December 1977. She was 81 at the time. Add 23 years to that, and she'd be about 104 now!

Ola was cited as a wonderful person who exemplified "Showmanship", having spent a 62-year career handling and inspecting film to assure quality presentation in theatres.

Bruce notes he has a copy of Kodak publication H-50. This publication is the "Reel People Collection", which is a compilation of the first 14 issues of "Film Notes for Reel People" (July 1976 to October 1983). Although some of the material is outdated (e.g., cement splicing techniques) there is still much good information in these old issues. I especially enjoy the humorous "Legendary Lexicon of Projection".

First published in 1984, the "Reel People Collection" (publication H-50, CAT Number 131-6223)is still available from Kodak by calling 716-588-9308 or 800-233-1650. To order Kodak publications outside the USA, contact your local Kodak Professional Motion Imaging Sales Office, listed on Kodak's web site:

We're looking forward to those older issues of Reel Notes. It will be a very welcome addition to the other manuals and literature available for free download here!
