OK so my business partner has asked me to compile a list of booth supplys for our 5-plex that we are taking over. I have done this in the past but I thought it would be fun to get all of your input on this.

I'll start it off with one bottle of Film-Guard to go with the existing Christie film cleaner. I guess I'll need to order media. What kind should I get?

Please list other booth supplys you think I need. I'll post my order list in a couple of days.

Thanks

Obviously booth-running supplies such as splicing tape, automation cue tape, spare xenon and exciter lamps, motor-drive belts should be considered.

Here in Ontario I come across booths with a bare minimum of supplies (I had to deliver a motor-drive belt, recently), and some that are better stocked than our shop (almost rivalling the contents of the trunk of my car).

If working for a single chain, some technicians seize the chance to play "Robin Hood", and redistribute some of these supplies to more needy theatres.

Don't forget:

-Permacel white paper tape (for marking film, etc...)
-An actual splicer
-Platter covers (Speco)
-Shop rags for each projector
-Small trash can by each projector (nice but not necessary)
-Magnets to post schedules on each lamphouse
-70 foot leader! Any less is uncivilized!
-RP40.
-Tools

I almost forgot!

-Pillows and a blanket, since all projectionists are lazy bums
-Television, so the projectionist has something to do (while doing nothing for 2 hours when shows are running)
-Toilet paper rolls. They make great media pads when running IMAX thru FilmGuard.
-Telephone, to constantly call Telluride at managers' expense (inside joke)
-Complete set of Star Wars action figures (This will make Lucas like you enough to give you a complimentary THX Certification, without all of the hassle and inconvenience of properly setting up the auditorium.)
-Computer, to play solitaire on all day and occasionally access porn on the net.

Hope that helps!

Microwave Oven
Lazy-Boy chair (with the vibrating option)
General Electric 50mm Rotary Cannon pointing at the booth door connected to a 'booth idiot' detector. "Danger, Will Robinson! Alien gasses from booth idiot detected!"

Gate/trap bands
Pad roller springs
Belts for projector (if used)
"Special" hardware (like thumbscrews) that could get lost and shut you down (like the thumbscrews for the shutter cover on a Simplex.)
Fuses (take a moment to find what fuses are actually used, rather than just buying a bunch)
That bulb Dolby digital uses
Lens brush
If you use circuit breakers to turn equipment on/off - one spare of whatever amperage they are.

Gigantic clock, you can see from anywhere.

Buying and leaving tools in a booth depends on who will be allowed in. I never saw tools disappear faster than from a booth. I like to leave a really cheap screwdriver and pliers next to each machine. People are more likely to fix that loose screw if the tools are right there.

Tell us what kind of equipment you have, and everyone here will tell you what breaks alot on that particular equipment.

Of course, if you were to buy all the (real) stuff listed so far, you'd have no money left!

Thanks Guys,

I will also need 6 7,000 foot reels
a couple of plastic 2,000 foot reels for rewind
a split reel
a trailer flange
4 more film cleaners, w/ brackets
I may need to buy or make a new make up table
film clamps

I will need to see what is left in the theatre when we take it over. We take over on January 3rd. We will be showing our first film by the 15th. We will keep you informed of the challange of opening a theatre of our own.

I noticed you have film clamps on your list. Just be careful who you let use them. At my old theatre, the platters got so badly scratched that the engineer ended up stealing the clamps right out of the tool cabinet and tossed them in the trash.

I liked having Goldberg 2000' house reels around for film inspection and one-time-only shows...just make sure that you get some that aren't bent.

It's also good to have a few really cheap shipping reels that you don't mind using to replace reels that get damaged in shipment.

A big clock is important...get one that runs on AC power rather than batteries.

I liked having a handcrank rewind bench in the booth as well as a motorized one, but maybe I'm just crazy.

Umm...let's see...what else: tape that doesn't leave gunk on the film, sharpies, small pads of paper, alligator clips (yes, these have saved me on a few nights!), spare exciter lamps, lens paper, reel cabinets, splicing tape, naptha (grease solvent), projector cleaning supplies, telephone, etc. Pretty much all the stuff that's been mentioned here.

Wow. 11 replies and NO ONE has mentioned WD-40 and duct tape yet!!!

Seriously, what is the equipment list (projectors, platters, lamphouses, automation)? Also, did anyone mention diodes yet? Another must is a minimum of 2 splicers. Never know when that yahoo will leave your only splicer on a platter and then go to thread...launching it!
